If you want to lose weight be accountable.

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I updated the graphs on my about me page yesterday.

I’ve got two graphs. One is from Skinnyr and shows the last ten datapoints that I’ve entered on their site. This one looks pretty good with a steady decrease.

I added in another one using the simple graph plugin which shows a bit more of a long term view. Unfortunately I only started recording my weight seriously in May last year when I was 127 kgs so my journey down from 137 to 127 has been lost.

One thing that becomes readily apparent when you look at my graph is that I had a rather serious fall off the healthy lifestyle wagon around about mid October last year and gained about 11 kilograms. I spent most of October, November and December eating wayyyy too much and did not do any exercise. I also stopped recording my weight and stopped being accountable. This blog is my way of keeping myself accountable. I’m going to record my weight every day on my Skinnyr graph and do my weekly weighin on my other graph. That way I’ll be able to see how I’m doing and take corrective action quickly.

C25K Week 04 Completed

The value of having a blog really came home to me today. I was on the treadmill doing my last run of Week 04 of C25K and I really wanted to give up. But, I just couldn’t face reporting failure to my loyal readers. So I stuck it out and managed to finish. I almost did a Marshmallow and woohooed. Thankfully I resisted the urge.

I think I made a mistake in doing my run after my weights workout today. I did a personal best (and achieved one of my goals) on the squat in that I managed to squat (ass to grass) 100kgs (220 pounds). However, I think this made my legs quite tired so the run was a lot harder than usual. But, having said that, I completed the run so it’s all good.

I also managed to do 20 pushups in a row and then followed it up by doing 30 more (3 sets of 10 not 30 in a row) so I am getting closer to my goal of 25 in a row. Which is great.

Overall, I’m rather happy with my progress. I’m getting fitter and am feeling great. :)

Weigh in

Well I had a pleasant surprise on my weekly weigh in this week. I’m down to 107.6 kg (237 pounds). I don’t know how but I managed to lose 1.9 kgs (4 pounds) this week.  That seems suspiciously large so maybe I’m just a bit dehydrated.  I’ll drink more water today.

My eating and exercise were reasonably good this week.  Wednesday was Chinese New Year and we went to a family gathering.  I ate quite a bit more than normal but having said that it was all very healthy, nutritious food.

If only losses like this could happen every week it would make this journey a bit quicker. :)

That makes 70 pounds lost so far and only 50 to go.

Cakes and cookies are vegetarian food too

I’ve been a vegetarian for 580 days now (Not that I’m counting or anything).

I had gone through periods of vegetarianism when I was a kid but never voluntarily. It was more because my parents went through bouts of it and as a child I didn’t have much say as to what was served up. :)

I made the decision to be a vegetarian of my own free will (contrary to popular opinion). My wife is a vegetarian and so some of my friends believe that she forced me into it. To tell the truth I think my wife was more shocked than anyone that I became a vegetarian. I had read something on zen habits (I think) about how you can make anything a habit if you just stick to it for 30 days. So I thought I would surprise my wife and be vegetarian for 30 days. (I’d been going through a hard time at work (we were going through some restructuring) and I was looking for something that I could control I guess.)

And what do you know, it does become a habit after 30 days. At the end of 30 days I thought I would do 30 more. Then another 30. Then I wanted to reach 100 and so on and so forth. Now I’m aiming for 600. ;)

Most people thought I was joking when I told them about my decision. One of my friends was particularly shocked when she found out. “But you’re Mr Meat!?” she spluttered at me. That description was rather apt. One of my favourite dishes was the traditional South African boerewors roll. Basically, it’s a big meaty South African sausage in a hotdog bun as pictured below.

Boerewors roll

Definitely food of the gods. :) I used to eat meat and lots of it. I did enjoy meat but I’ve decided that it is better for me if I avoid it.Originally I thought that being a vegetarian would help me lose weight. But ice cream, cake, cookies and chips are all solidly vegetarian. Which turned out to be a bit of a problem. I think I’m one of the few people who actually gained about 20 kilos (44 pounds) within a year of turning vegetarian. I was one of those vegetarians that didn’t really eat many vegetables. Not really something I’m proud of but hey it happened.

I’ve since revised my eating habits and now eat mainly fresh vegetables with the odd treat thrown in for good behaviour.

Most days I eat the following:

Breakfast (6am) is some bran cereal with blueberries and a glass of protein drink.

Morning tea (9am) is normally 2 hardboiled eggs.

Lunch (12pm) is normally some concoction of vegetables all mixed up (my last concoction had 13 different vegetables in it). I normally make my lunches for the week in bulk on Sunday afternoons.

Afternoon tea (3pm) is normally another glass of protein drink and some fruit.

Dinner (6pm) is normally a fresh garden salad and some fruit.

Occasionally I’ll vary from this (normally on the weekend) if the circumstances warrant but it’s a pretty good indication of what I eat. On the days I do weights I’ll have more protein.

I feel better than ever so I think I’ll give this vegetarian lifestyle a few more days yet. :)

I’ve entered my first 5K

I’ve decided to give myself an extra bit of incentive to keep up with C25K by entering a 5K race at the end of March.

Oh boy, I never thought I would ever do this or even desire to do this!

I’ve selected the 1st race of the Run Auckland series for a few reasons:

1. It is pretty close to where I live.
2. It is on the 30th of March which is about two weeks after I’m scheduled to complete the C25K program.
3. It is the first race of a series. In moments of madness I like to think I may want to do a few more.

This is the route map:

Now I just need to pray it doesn’t rain.

C25K Week 04 Day 01

Today is Waitangi Day in New Zealand, which means that it is a public holiday (yay!). The downside of this is that my gym is shut today so I had to go running out in public - the horror!

I decided I would go and do my session along the Auckland waterfront as it is relatively flat and the view is outstanding. My route map is here.

Auckland Waterfront

I took my camera along to get some shots of the sunrise but unfortunately I’ve suffered a camera malfunction and all my photos have disappeared off of it. This is a photo of where I was off flickr.Week 4 has a lot more running than in week 03. In fact the shortest run this week is as long as the longest run from last week.As always, it starts off with a 5 min brisk walk to walk up. This was easy. :)

The next phase was an easy three minute run. This was followed by a very short ninety second walk. Then came the longest run so far - five minutes. Now five minutes doesn’t seem particularly long, but boy, by the end of it I was shuffling along like an arthritic old man. I was very glad that there was a two and a half minute walk after it. The next three minute run seemed easy by comparison although the ninety second walk after it flashed by. The last five minutes were tough. After running for what seemed like half an hour my podcast buddy said: “You’re doing great - one more minute to go! Step it up!” So I did, and I survived.

And I showed myself that I could do week 04.

Running outside is quite different to running on the treadmill. For one thing, it’s harder to pace yourself. On the treadmill, you have to keep to a certain pace or you fall off the back. On the road there is no such pressure. Another thing I noticed was that the air is damn nippy before sunrise. And, a nice thing I noticed is the cameraderie amongst the exercisers. There were a lot of runners and walkers along the route I choose. Almost everyone gives you a smile and a nod.

I’m already looking forward to the next workout on Friday, although I’ll be heading back to the gym for this one. I think once I can do the full 5 km I will be running outside more. I’m starting to get addicted to this.

Weigh in

I bought a nice new Tanita scale from Pharmacy Direct. It’s a digital one that gives a consistent reading! My old scale was one of those spring jobs that (if you knew the tricks) could help you magically lose a few pounds. It also gives a bodyfat reading and has a few other tricks. I only really trust the weight reading. ;)

My weekly weigh in came in at 109.5 kgs (241 pounds) this week. That’s a loss of .9 kg (2 pounds) from last week’s weigh in.

I’m reasonably happy with that and hopefully I will be able to do the same again this week.

That means my total lost now is 66 pounds with 54 to go!

Pushups

One of my goals is to be able to do 25 pushups in a row. Now this may not seem like much to some of you but to me it is quite a few! :)

I started off by adding a few pushups to my routine at the gym and have been adding one every session this year.

I’m up to 15 in a row. I normally follow up with a few sets with the aim of eventually building up to 75 total pushups. At the moment my total pushups for each session comes to 42. Every session I do at least one more than the previous session.

It will take me a while to work up to my goal but I’ve learnt that slow and steady wins the race so I will continue in this way.

C25K Week 03 Completed

I completed week 03 of the C25K program today.

Week 03 involved a brisk 5 minute walk as a warmup, followed by 90 seconds of running, 90 seconds of walking, 3 minutes of running, 2 minutes of walking, 90 seconds of running, 90 seconds of walking, 3 minutes of running and then a 5 minute cooldown walk.

I’m very pleased that I am still sticking with the program. I’m convinced that I will be able to do the whole program and am really looking forward to running my first 5K. I don’t think I’ve run 5K in my life!

More on mind power

Craig Harper wrote an interesting post today that echoed what I wrote in my previous post.

If only our mind wouldn’t get in the way, we could do some amazing stuff!

It’s true; for too many people their mind gets in the way of (what’s possible for) their body. For many morbidly obese people their fat, unhealthy body is a symptom of their fat, unhealthy mind (attitude, thinking, beliefs, excuses, fears, choices, addictions) and when we fix the head stuff, then invariably we see the body change - you know that. When the thinking changes, the behaviours change, the habits change and the body changes.

I have been working on my mind and I reckon I’m getting there. As with all changes, it’s one day at a time. :)
