Weigh in

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed and see some of my favourite posts! Thanks for visiting!

It’s been a good two weeks since my last weigh in.

I didn’t weigh in last week as I went on holiday and didn’t have access to a good scale. During my holiday I enjoyed myself and went to my brother’s wedding. It was great.

Since I’ve come back I’ve completed my first 5K race and week 02 of the OHR program.

Today I weighed in at 100.7 kilograms (222 pounds). This is down around 1.4 kgs (just over 3 pounds) over the 2 week period. Considering I thought I’d gained weight while on holiday this is a great result.

35 pounds or about 16 kgs to go to get to my longer term goal. By next Monday I would love to be under 100 kgs. Double digits are so close now.

I did it!

I have my first 5K race under my belt!

Preparation started 10 weeks or so ago when I first started the C25K program but you can go read all the posts about that if you want to know more!

Preparation for this specific event started yesterday afternoon when I went to Takapuna to get my race pack. I’d never been to the Takapuna Athletics Club before so of course I went to the Takapuna Rugby Club instead. Luckily my darling wife (navwoman) steered me right. It was an honest mistake as the two buildings are next to each other and share a carpark.

It’s funny, but I was quite nervous going in. It’s almost like you expect the person handing out the packs to say Oi! You! You don’t look like you can do it! Get out of here. I guess I have one or two insecurities still. Anyway, needless to say it was fine, they had my name on the list and I got my pack no problems. I went home with a grin on my face, runner #66.

My Running Bib

That evening, I spent quite a while going over all my gear, checking my Garmin was charged and so forth. I had to attach the timing chip to my shoe laces and, believe it or not, it took me twenty minutes to figure out how to do it. It should be relatively straightforward but it wasn’t.

Anyways, I went to bed about 10:30 and woke up at 12, 2, 4 and 5:20. Nerves, you ask? No, baby I say. My poor little girl had done some rather nasty power chucks all over her cot and didn’t sleep well. Neither did my wife and I.

I got up at 5:20 and had breakfast and spent some time reading up on the Running Ahead forums looking for some last minute tips. I didn’t really learn anything new but it still felt good reading about how others had done it.

At about 8:30 my wife dropped me off at the race venue. As soon as she drove off my spirits sank a bit - everyone looked so fit and professional! However, I walked to the start area and realised that the people I had seen were all part of a club and were fit and professional! Fortunately for me, there were heaps of normal looking people around and everything was good.

I bumped into one of my colleagues who was going to do the 10K event and we chatted for a bit. The safety briefing was at 8:45 so I thought I had better relieve myself before the event (as you do). 1000 competitors and 3 portaloos. Let’s just say the trees got watered a lot. Men went into the bushes on the right and ladies the bushes on the left.

The safety briefing was over quickly. Basically they just wanted us to be aware that the roads weren’t closed so we had to be careful. The funniest thing they said was that if you don’t think you are fit enough to complete the event then please get professional help. I somehow doubt anyone decided then and there to give up but you never know.

5 minutes before the start a rather attractive lady stomped off with her partner in tow. She’d been disqualified for having a bare torso! Against the rules even if it was a very nice torso.

The folk doing the 10K event were off first and there looked to be about 650 (a mixture of runners and walkers) of them but that’s just a guess. It took about a minute and a half for them all to get through the start but then it was our turn. At this point I gulped down a energy gel pack as I hadn’t had any food for a few hours and I thought it would give me a boost.

I lined up closer to the back of the pack than the front as I figured I wouldn’t be setting any records. We then had about a five minute wait as we had to give the 10K runners a ten minute head start. About 20 seconds before we were due to go the sound system died and the support crew were frantically trying to get it up so that we could hear the signal to go. The lady who was doing the countdown just screamed go as they clock hit 0 and we went!

The first section was a mad rush as everyone tried to get through the start gate as quickly as possible. As I went under the gate I remembered to activate my watch so that I could have all the stats at the end (whew!).

The course started off in a park and for the first 500 meters we were running through this park. There were quite a few little bridges that we had to cross and I was nervously looking at the max weight limits as there were a lot of us on those bridges! I passed a lot of people in the first 500 meters and I think I was probably going too fast but, having said that, I was passed by a lot as well so it was probably just the field sorting itself out.

course

The next bit of the course wound around the Remuera golf course and it wasn’t too bad. I was feeling pretty good and I had picked my bunny, a rather fit looking girl. About 500 meters later I picked a new bunny as my bunny was gone. Unfortunately she started walking about 250 meters later so I gave up on bunnies.

The first hill came as we left the golf course surrounds and went into a residential area. I was quite pleased as I actually passed some rather fit looking individuals. There was one guy in particular who always walked up the hills then sprinted past me to the next hill where I would overtake him again. I eventually left him behind about 3.5 km in. I think I found the hilly bits easier mentally as I sort of expected them to be tough. When I got to the top of the hilly bits then I felt buggered for a bit and let my mental focus slip somewhat.

I hit the first water break quicker than I had expected. I was on track to come in under 30 minutes at that point. My aim was to come in in under 32 minutes. I told everyone who asked 35 but I was thinking 32 would be good. I had been faster on the treadmill but always ran slower when I ran outside so I thought under 32 was reasonable.

The third kilometer was tough as we climbed quite a ways. At least it felt that way to me. I’ve avoided hills in my training so far but I think I shall be adding them in the future.

Let’s pause the story of my run for a little rant. What’s with the walkers walking three or four abreast and chatting! We runners kept having to run out in the road to pass! It was really annoying to say the least. One of the things I have learnt from reading other people’s race reports is that it is polite to keep out of the way of the faster people wherever possible. Oh well, end rant.

At the 3 kilometer mark the leading 10ker lapped me (The 10kers did 2 laps of the 5K circuit). He was motoring! I didn’t see another 10ker for about a minute (or so it felt). That guy was fast! I was most impressed.

The 4th kilometer wasn’t too bad. I think it was mainly downhill so I was feeling alright. However, there was a sharp uphill right at the end of it that annoyed me somewhat. I apologise to runner #458. The swearing wasn’t directed at you.

The last kilometer was tough! I was pretty much out of gas and the little voice inside me was saying it’s ok, you can walk but I didn’t. I’m rather proud of that. I really wanted to but one of my goals was to run the whole race.

Then I did it! I hit 5K but, to my utter horror, I discovered that the finish line was another 400 meters away! I had semi expected it as I had read on another blog that the course was slightly longer than 5K but I didn’t think that the organisers were that bastardly.

That last 400 meters was very tough. They say you should sprint the last bit but I had no sprinting in me. I focused on the runners ahead of me and tried to haul them in and to my pleasure I did manage to overtake two of them. Most importantly, I was not chicked at the end! It was such a great feeling to hit the finish line. I felt such a great surge of personal satisfaction and vindication. And boy was I buggered. I pretty much just sat down on the grass to take my timing chip off. My colleague was there and congratulated me which was great. He’d had to pull out of the 10K at the halfway mark as he’d gotten a really bad headache but had hung around to see me come in.

The time on my watch was 30:54 which I was very happy with. 5.4 km in 30:54 meant that my pace was 5:44 per kilometer which I think is great! According to my watch I hit the real 5km mark in 28:46 which I am extremely pleased with.

Times

Afterwards my brilliant wife picked me up and she had my snacks that I had forgotten in the car with her! She is a legend. Thank you darling for all your support.

I’ve still got a stupid grin on my face. I’m amazed at how far I have come in such a short time. One of my commentors, Chief Wahoo, said something along the lines of how he finds races times of reflection where he thinks about how far he has come and where he would like to go. I understand what he means (I always understood, but now I feel it!) more deeply now.

Thank you all of you who have helped me along the way. You guys rock!

As an aside this also means I’ve completed week 02 of the OHR program.

Hmm…now this is looking very tempting for next Sunday. :)

If you need an excuse to skip the gym today…

Thankfully this is not from my gym…

Stolen from here. :)

My first 5K approaches

I’ve got my first ever 5K race coming up on Sunday. It’s the first race in a series of six and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s only been a few months since I started running and now I’m going to run a race. It’s very exciting actually.

One thing I have noticed is that the more I run outside the more I adjust my expectations downward. I did some really quick (by my standards) times on the treadmill but since I’ve started running outside my times have been a lot slower. I think the hills are what are slowing me down. I’m having a bit of trouble judging how fast to run I think so I’m hoping my new Garmin will help me pace my runs better.

Speaking of which, I completed my second run of week 02 of the One Hour Runner program yesterday and I used my Garmin for the first time. I decided to go for a run in the Auckland Domain again. It was the toughest run I’ve done in quite a while for some reason. I was fine for the first two kilometers but the last three were extremely tough and I really struggled to complete them. It didn’t help that there were about a thousand school kids milling around as there was some event on. Oh well, I guess they can’t all be brilliant runs.

I’m still trying to figure out how to use the data from my Garmin effectively. There are a few different sites and applications that you can use to upload data and analyse it. I haven’t quite had the time to sort through and play with them yet. Anyone have any recommendations?

A tale of two weddings

I was uploading my photos to flickr when I remembered that I had been to a wedding about this time last year as well.
before and after
Same glasses, same beard. Different everything else I think. :) Just in case you are wondering, the one on the left is the one from a year ago. ;)

When I get braver I’ll release some more before shots.

One Hour Runner Week 01 Completed & Sundry Other Things

I went down to Christchurch for the Easter long weekend as my brother was getting married.

I flew down on Thursday evening with my wife and baby daughter. My daughter was no trouble at all and slept most of the way down. Our flight was delayed by an hour as a bird got sucked into the plane engine and they wanted to check it out. Fair enough I thought.

On Friday my mother and wife had an epic baking session as my mother was providing nibbles and starters for my brother’s wedding. We also had the wedding rehearsal which went off well.

Saturday was the day of the wedding and it was pouring with rain in the early hours of the morning. This was problematic as it was supposed to be an outdoor wedding. Fortunately the weather cleared up and by the time the wedding arrived things were looking good.

The wedding went off without a hitch and as I was the best man I had to give a speech. My speech was well received by all so I was most pleased. I was also pleased that a lot of people noticed that I had lost a lot of weight. Unfortunately I didn’t stick to my resolution to just eat healthy and overindulged in desserts. But in my defence, they served chocolate cake! How is one supposed to resist?

On Sunday I needed to do a run so that I could stick to my OHR program. So I went and did a 30 minute run with my dad which was great. It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve done a healthy exercise with my dad and it really was special. I also completed week 01 of the one hour running program by doing this run.

On Monday I was feeling the need for some more exercise so went for another 5K run and on Tuesday my dad wanted to go for a run so I went for yet another 5K run. Which means I did about 15 km of running over 3 days which was pretty good. I really enjoyed it and it was all done outside.

In other news my Garmin Forerunner has arrived so I will need to and do a run tomorrow to test it! I’ll write up a report once I have it figured out.

Overall I had a great weekend away. I did more exercise than I have ever done while on holiday and my eating wasn’t too bad. I did struggle to eat healthy as I was not really in charge of the food decisions like I am at home. Also, my family tends to celebrate togetherness by eating out and sharing food etc. It is nice, but it is also very easy to overdo it and I’m afraid I did somewhat. Still, I did much better than I have ever done before.

I’m going to give this weekend an A for exercise, a C+ for food decisions and an A for good times.

One Hour Runner Week 01 Day 02

I did 5.44 km in my 30 minutes today. I did this at the gym on the treadmill. On my last run I set the treadmill to a 11 kph pace so this time I set it to 11.1 kph (an improvement is an improvement). I managed to maintain this up until the 25 minute mark when I reduced the pace to 11 kph. The .1 made all the difference I tell you! Once I hit the 5K mark I slowed right down to 9 kph and it was bliss. My 5K time was 27:04 which was a new PR for me.

My next two runs are going to be outside as
a) I want to get used to running outside as I have my first 5K race next Sunday and
b) I’m going to Christchurch for a week as my brother is getting married and I won’t have access to a treadmill there.

I bought a Garmin 305 exercise watch which has a built in GPS receiver so that I could track my outdoor runs but unfortunately it’s been intercepted by customs here in NZ as the person who I bought it from didn’t write down the proper value on the package and they got suspicious. I guess the seller thought he was being helpful but I wouldn’t have to pay any duty anyway so it’s a bit annoying. Fortunately it was easily fixed as I just faxed them a copy of the invoice and they released it. It does mean I won’t have it in time for my Christchurch trip however. Oh well, something to look forward to when I return.

I don’t think I’ll be able to blog much over the next week but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up or anything. I still plan on getting in my runs and eating healthy while I’m on holiday. Of course I will have the odd snack (hmmmmm….wedding cake!) but on the whole I think this will be the healthiest holiday I’ve ever had.

One Hour Runner Week 01 Day 01

I started the One Hour Runner program today.

The first three weeks of the program call for you to run for thirty minutes three times a week.

Before my run I went to Lumino dentist to get my teeth cleaned and polished. Boy, I’m not normally too worried about a dentist visit but the guy I had today was not particularly gentle. I actually had to get him to stop so I could recover a bit which is a first for me. I don’t think I’ll be going to that practice again if I have to see that guy which is a shame as the dentist I had last time was much, much better.

I went to the gym after as my wife had told me that it’s very quiet at about 9:30 -10:00ish. I normally go either early in the morning or late in the afternoon as it fits better with my schedule. The gym was very quiet and there were about eight treadmills empty which is quite unusual in my experience.

I haven’t run since my run in the Domain last Friday (I’m not counting my short runs at Round the Bays on Sunday) so I was feeling fairly keen. I decided I would set the pace a bit faster than normal and see how I go. I went great. I kept the slightly faster pace going for 25 minutes before I slowed down to my normal pace for the last few minutes.

Today’s goal was a time one. I had to run for 30 minutes. I managed to run 5.4 km in those thirty minutes. However, I’m tracking my 5K times as I have my first 5K race coming up next Sunday and I managed to set a personal record of 27:27 for 5K. After hitting the 5K mark I slowed right down hence I only did another 400 meters in the last 2 and a half minutes.

I bought some new shoes on the weekend and this was my first run with them. I got myself some Adidas Supernova Cushion 7s and I can highly recommend them. They were quite pricey ($209.99) but I think it was money well spent. Unfortunately shoes are rather expensive here in NZ. For my next pair I will probably buy them overseas and have them shipped in as these shoes only cost about $89 in the US. I had been using my Nike Free 7s to run in but I’ve been told that they do not have enough support for running outside. I have to say that I think these new Adidas shoes are brilliant. I don’t know if it was the shoes or the break or I’m getting fitter or a combination of the above but today’s run was great and I didn’t feel like giving up at any point in it.

I love running! :)

I found a video review of my shoes:

My fitness assessment results are in!

I mentioned previously that I had booked in for a fitness assessment. Well, today was the fateful day.

It started off fairly innocuously as the instructor was late. So the first ten minutes of my test were spent sitting down. Average heartrate 54 bpm.

Once he arrived, we then had to climb 4 flights of stairs up to the testing room. Average heartrate 100 bpm. Much to my disappointment that was not part of the test.

We then sat down and he explained what he was going to measure and asked for a bit of my history etc. He was absolutely floored when I told him I had already lost 81 pounds. He said he’d seen me in the gym before and never would have guessed I’d lost that much weight.

The first thing that he tested was my blood pressure. This came in as 120/80 which is in the high end of the normal range apparently.

The next test was the one I was dreading. The body fat test. He started off by telling me that over 25% was obese and that he’d never had anyone go that high before. I immediately thought oh shit I’m going to be the first. He asked me if I had any idea of what my rating was and I told him by scale says about 22-24 depending on which way the wind is blowing. He measured me up and the rating came in at 18.9% which I was sure was a mistake so he did it again and got the same. Friggin hell that’s in the normal range for men! Now I still think he’s off by a hell of a lot a bit but hey, he’s the expert not me. ;)

I also got my waist to hip ratio done and that was in the normal range as well. The dreaded BMI was computed and as expected it came in as overweight.

The next test was for estimated VO2 max and it involved cycling while he took some measurements of my heart rate and adjusted knobs and buttons to make it harder. My estimated VO2 max is 50 which he said was ok.

I then had to do the strength tests. The first of these was to do as many pushups in a row as I could. I did 25 as I knew I could do 25 then piked out. I should have done a few more but oh well. Once more he said that my effort was in the fair to good range for my age group. The next test was the sit up test. For this one I had to do as many sit ups as I could in 1 minute. I got to 40 which rates as good but I’m going to do a voluntary downgrade to fair as I’m fairly sure that the last few weren’t quite up to form.

I also had to do some flexibility tests which I aced. There were 3 sets, a touching the hands behind the back, one arm from above, one from below. I surprised myself when I did that one I’ll tell you. Then there was a hamstring test which was fine. And last but not least the old touch the toes test. I’ve been able to touch my toes ever since I started doing squats. Squats are great for improving your flexibility I reckon. Everyone should do them.

I must admit I was quite surprised by my results. I appear to be a lot fitter than I thought I was. The trainer said I should work more on my strength as my cardio fitness is good. I won’t quite change the name of my blog to Andrew is fit yet however. I still have a significant amount of weight to lose from around my stomach area. But it does appear that I am no longer unfit which is something to celebrate. :)

I think the next test that I will do will be the beep test. I’ve never done one of these and I’m told they are quite tough.

Weigh in

Today I weighed in at 102.1 kg (225.1 pounds) which is down .7 kg (1.5 pounds) from last week. I’m happy that I had a loss so all is good. I was a little worried that I might show a gain as I overindulged a bit this weekend.

Most weekends I have a treat of some form, but this weekend I had a piece of chocolate cake (and it was good!) and a mocha on Saturday morning with my wife and then a Devonshire tea (scones and a coffee) at One Tree Hill with my wife and some of my friends. Normally that would be fine but after Round the Bays yesterday there was a free bbq and I was starving so I had 4 sandwiches instead of 2. I should have planned ahead and brought my own food but hey, I’m human.

I weigh in every day and it’s been interesting to see some large swings this week. You can see my daily graph here. I’ve also noticed that I’ve started to get really hungry on the days that I’m running. This never used to happen so I guess my body wants more energy.

I’ve got quite a bit on this week. I’m starting the One Hour Runner program on Tuesday. I’ve got a fitness assessment coming up. And I’m off to Christchurch for my brother’s wedding.
