C25K Week 06 Completed

I had this great idea that I would go and run along the beach at Mission Bay this morning but when I woke up today it was absolutely pouring down with rain.  I don’t know about you my loyal readers, but the idea of running in monsoon like conditions just does not appeal to me.

So, I did the next best thing and went to the gym to visit the treadmill instead.  On the drive in to the gym I passed a bunch of hardy souls out running and I must admit I did feel a little soft.

Today’s run called for 25 minutes on non stop running.  No mucking about with intervals or what not.  I started off thinking “I can do this!”  Halfway through I was thinking “I’m going to die.” But I refused to give up and I didn’t die.

Today’s run was the longest non stop run I have done in my life. I covered 4.1 km in 25 minutes.  I’m fairly proud of that even though its not particularly fast.  The fact remains that I did it. :)

I maintain – the rain is not the problem when it comes to ‘running in the rain’, but rather, for me, it is the ‘running in the glasses that get all spotted up and foggy in the rain’ that dissuades me from running outside when its raining. And when I ran at the triathlon in the rain without my glasses, the entire time I felt I could’ve run off a cliff or onto the path of a moving car.

And how the hell did you run 4.1km in 25 minutes?! THAT’S NOT FAIR!!! I wish *I* could run that distance in that time!

*snort* You were worried about getting chicked. *grumble grumble ASSHOLE grumble* :P

lol you made me laugh out loud with the “I’m going to die” comment in the middle of your run. I laugh because I can totally relate with this entire experience.

MAJOR kudos to you on this run. 25 min straight is great- I’m impressed. I was trying to find your link clicking through my site.. had to find you on John’s Forum.. glad I found you. Nice blog you have here :)

Marshmallow: It was on the treadmill at 1 measly percent incline. I’m sure you could do that. And I feel your pain re the glasses. I tried contacts but it took me an average of 45 mins a day (I know!) to get them in so I gave up.

TB: Welcome back. My old site is still not back. My webhost provider says they got hacked and they are still working on restoring all the websites.

Lady Rose: Welcome to my site. You’ve got a great one too and I’ve subscribed. :)

That’s awesome! I can’t wait be able to do 25 minutes of non-stop running as well.

Have you had any injuries since you’ve started C25K? I was limping yesterday then went to my physiotherapist and she said I have a problem with my iliotibial (IT) band. It is painful and apparently common among new runners. It’s been bugging me today too and I hope that it doesn’t interfere with my progress ;-(

Oh, and how fast were you going on the treadmill? I normally do between 3.8 – 4.1 mph.

  9. AndrewENo Gravatar on March 2nd, 2008 5:38 pm

I’ve been starting off at about 6.3mph and a 1% incline and as I get more tired I slow it down to about 6mph and .5% incline. I suspect the lower incline may actually make the run harder but psychologically I feel that I’m not running uphill that much anymore. :)

I haven’t gotten injured yet thankfully. I had a dodgy ankle when I started but it’s actually gotten better.

Lasik would be nice but it’s about $5000 here and I have other priorities.

Why can’t you just take the glasses off? If you are running on the treadmill, what do you need to see that you need your glasses or contacts?
I usually just take the glasses off. I mean… if there’s cute girls/guys, they will look even better without the glasses anyway :P

Other priorities are more like…other toys. Someone’s been buying a lot of sports related toys (or “tools” as I’ve been corrected by other guys at work who likes their gadgets, err I mean “productivity tools”.)

But the baby isn’t cheap either! Especially when the dad’s involved in buying decisions!!!!!

“if you are running on the treadmill, what do you need to see that you need your glasses or contacts?” – wasn’t this post initially whinging about not running outside in the rain? My optometrist says that if I’m going to wear my glasses, I should wear them all the time; including sitting in bed with a book, running on the treadmill, whatever.

And whoa, what on earth happened to the theme?

  17. AndrewENo Gravatar on March 4th, 2008 4:45 am

    Hehehe…have you thought about Lasik?

I accidentally changed the theme…then started playing with all sorts of different themes. Then ended up with this one. I’m a theme meddler.

Lasik isn’t an option for me, since I’ve already had eye surgery.

I’m generally not a theme meddler – I’ve only changed my theme twice; once modified the Rounders blogger theme (had a private blog, worked on the css for months, then imported the xml), and have recently modified the Minima blogger theme. All of that css hax means the theme doesn’t get changed very often!

Oh, didn’t know you should be wearing your glasses all the time, literately all the time, except sleeping and shower…

    Oh well… :P

I think it depends on the severity of your sight deficiency – my problem was double vision and required invasive surgery, so I pretty much need glasses to ‘hold’ my eyes in place since the muscles are very weak even with all of the strengthening stuff0rz added in.

    *shudders from the memories*

I guess… just stay in the gym for running then!

triathloN, no plural, thank you very much! And I don’t know how to ride a bike, although I want to learn, so I can actually do a triathlon *properly*

  24. SallyNo Gravatar on March 4th, 2008 8:44 pm

    Wow! Triathlon! Damn!

Err… surely you can bike, how else did you do the triathlon??

Ah, see there is such a thing as entering in a TEAM. A girl from work did the bike, and I did the swim and run.

  26. SallyNo Gravatar on March 4th, 2008 9:10 pm

Ohhhhhh ic ic. But swim and run sounds a lot harder…
(says the person who can’t run and used to have to take a rest during the warm up laps – thinking… this is not warm up, this is hard work!)

    Anyways :)

Don’t worry about the speed . . . endurance is were it’s at! 25 minutes for the first time is a huge accomplishment.

Also, most runners look for negative splits — running faster during the second half of a run or during later miles/km than in earlier parts of the run. Not sure if your program looks at that, but you might try starting slower to build time and increase slowly as you get further on.
