One Hour Runner Week 01 Day 02
If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!
I did 5.44 km in my 30 minutes today. I did this at the gym on the treadmill. On my last run I set the treadmill to a 11 kph pace so this time I set it to 11.1 kph (an improvement is an improvement). I managed to maintain this up until the 25 minute mark when I reduced the pace to 11 kph. The .1 made all the difference I tell you! Once I hit the 5K mark I slowed right down to 9 kph and it was bliss. My 5K time was 27:04 which was a new PR for me.
My next two runs are going to be outside as
a) I want to get used to running outside as I have my first 5K race next Sunday and
b) I’m going to Christchurch for a week as my brother is getting married and I won’t have access to a treadmill there.
I bought a Garmin 305 exercise watch which has a built in GPS receiver so that I could track my outdoor runs but unfortunately it’s been intercepted by customs here in NZ as the person who I bought it from didn’t write down the proper value on the package and they got suspicious. I guess the seller thought he was being helpful but I wouldn’t have to pay any duty anyway so it’s a bit annoying. Fortunately it was easily fixed as I just faxed them a copy of the invoice and they released it. It does mean I won’t have it in time for my Christchurch trip however. Oh well, something to look forward to when I return.
I don’t think I’ll be able to blog much over the next week but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up or anything. I still plan on getting in my runs and eating healthy while I’m on holiday. Of course I will have the odd snack (hmmmmm….wedding cake!) but on the whole I think this will be the healthiest holiday I’ve ever had.

You’re doing some serious speed on them treadmills these days!
I’m jealous of your watch, it sounds tres snazzy! Does it do HR stuff too or just GPS?

HR as well.
I’ll do a post on it once I’ve got my greedy mitts on it and came give it a go.

Glad the fitness test results were so good! I love getting new running shoes - I’m going shopping for some tomorrow. I’m also thinking about doing my first 5km race on Easter Monday, so it’ll be a PB for sure!

Nice Job on the PR…especially on the treadmill! I am so jealous of your new garmin, I have that on my running lust list

I love my 305, but admit that it’s addictive — gotta pay more attention to the road than your wrist. Use it well.
Man, you are flying on your runs. Good for you!
Have a great holiday.

I used to run 5km in 30 minutes for a long time as well. By mixing up my regular 5km runs with some high intensity interval training and regular interval training I managed to get my time to a personal best of 23 minutes for 5.2km! As a former couch potato it really is an amazing feeling! Ofcourse the faster you get, the harder it is to improve your time.
It’s been in a year since I set that record though. Now my time’s 30 minutes for 5km again… You really have to keep practicing to maintain your speed. But oh well.
Keep on running my friend! GL with the race.
greets

Great 5K time!
You are going to love the Garmin — I have the 205 (no heart rate monitor) and I love the ability to track, record and map my running. As well as having real time feedback regarding pace and distance. I don’t know how I ever ran without it!

Thanks all. I got my Garmin so I’m really keen to give it a go.
I had a great weekend and am back and committed again.
