Twas a dark and drizzly night

home short loopI have my next 5K race on Sunday so in order to get all my runs in this week I need to run Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  I like to have at least one day off between each run.

As such, seeing as today is Monday, I needed to get a run in.  Unfortunately my schedule was pretty full today so I had to run after dinner.  This was the first time I ran in the dark and in the rain. Truth be told it was rather nice.

There is a 5K loop very close to my house that my wife and I often walk and I thought it would be great to run it.

The first half of the run was uphill and the rain started just when I really needed it. I was all hot and already tired from running uphill and a gentle drizzle started to come down and it was great as it cooled me down very nicely. A few minutes in and it got quite a bit heavier but it never bothered me at all. I didn’t even have my running cap on as I’d left it next to the front door (so that I wouldn’t forget it on my way out…).  Turns out the fogging up of the glasses only happens when you stop running.

I don’t know why but I felt really fast today. The run went really well and I was really enjoying it. However, when I got back home and checked the Garmin it turns out that I was going a lot slower than I thought I was. I guess the uphill in the first half took most of my energy. I did 4.7 km in 27:53 so it wasn’t too bad. Why only 4.7 km instead of 5 km? Well I was going to do a loop of the cricket grounds at the end of my run but it had turned into a mudpit so I thought bugger that for a lark and just ran home instead.

I’ve got an alumni event at work tomorrow and it should be really interesting. I’ll be meeting a lot of people who haven’t seen me since I was 42 kgs (90 odd pounds) heavier than I am now. Should be fun.

Gosh… I’m sure they’ll notice a big difference – not simply in the weight loss, but also in your fitness level. It’s totally amazing how running isn’t something that you’re *trying* to do anymore… it’s no longer some far off goal… it’s just what you do. It’s a part of the new, healthier you. That so cool!

OH yes, you’re going to have lots of fun with people’s responses to the healthier version of you. It’s a reward in and of itself. Enjoy!

Hey, Andrew! Been seeing your comments on Cammy’s blog and thought I’d stop by to say hello. 90 lbs!! WOW!! I’m just a little over 50 and got more than that to go. Hope I can stick with it, but with the blog buddies I have acquired I don’t want to let them down, so I think I can…I think I can…I think I can…

Don’t blame you for not wanting to run in the muc. I wouldn’t want to do that either.

I know with my running, somedays I feel really fast, or feel like I could go forever, and then other days I feel as if I will die two minutes in or that I am really slow. It’s amazing how that can happen, even running the same exact route!

It should be rather fun seeing how much people think you’ve changed with the new you! or how many people don’t recognize you period!

Thanks for the advice about relaxing the upper body during a jog — I made sure to shake out my shoulders several times while running yesterday, and it really helped! Today, I feel great! :)

I find that getting out and running in “bad” weather (rain, snow, cold, after dark) always makes me feel like I am the master of my own destiny…

Saw your post about physics diet – I have been using it for 5 or 6 weeks now and appreciate the smoothed average to track weight – rather then getting all caught up in the daily fluctuations

I love running when the conditions are less than perfect – be it rain, snow, cold, after dark – it makes me feel like I am the master of my own destiny!

Running in the dark. Times like this makes me really wish I wasn’t a woman.

Oddly enough, I too also really enjoy running in the rain!

I’m glad you had a great Monday. Mine has turned out not too bad actually. Granted its only 3h22pm… but the good news is, I survived work!

I always love running in the rain. It’s like you’re doing something extra hard…running and enduring the raindrops :)

I know I always look at ppl who are out running in the rain and think A) You nutter and B) You legend!

You know, even though I have this whole “morning running” thing going on right now, I really do love running in the evening.

Of course, I suppose if I could force myself to wake up early enough, it would still be dark outside during my morning runs as well…hmmm…

Hard to tell fast from slow sometimes. Also, maybe the weather had an impact on how you felt.

Can’t wait to read about the alumni event — nothing like that positive reinforcement of seeing folks you haven’t seen in a while when you’ve changed so dramatically. (And of course, it’s also nice to see the jock from school that’s now 250 lbs and bald. Sorry, just me. Character flaw I guess.)

    Meant to say 350 lbs.

I don’t think I want to be running in the dark at all! But good on you for doing it :)
