Things that annoy me about losing weight

It’s funny but over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a few annoying things about losing a lot of weight.

Then again, why am I whinging complaining? All these things are aboslutely brilliant! Visible signs of success. They’re still annoying thought. How about you guys? Anything that particularly bugs you?

In other news, I’ve got a busy day ahead of me so I thought I would get a morning run in.  I got up at 5:00 AM got dressed and had a smoothie then headed out the door.  I did the same loop that I did in my night run the other day and I’ve reached the conclusion that I need to find another loop, especially while I’ve still got this annoying cold.  The first mile of the loop is uphill and it gets me really tired before I’ve even started to really run.  I think it was exacerbated today by my cold and lack of fuel.  I don’t think the smoothie was enough.

And did I mention that it was pouring down with rain?  One of my worries has been running in the rain but it’s no problem at all.  With my cap on I can run just fine.  The glasses haven’t been fogging up yet so it’s all good.

Two more days till my next 5K race! :)

That’s so encouraging – to hear people who have started this program and kept up with it! I hope someday I experience the “annoying” things you mentioned in your post!

I have the same problem with being cold all the time. Honestly i thought it was just me.

As for the wedding ring, I used to not be able to wear my ring and now it is almost too big. I have developed this habit of sliding my ring on and off a few hundred times a day just to remind myself I can.

I guess I’ll have to have it resized soon, but I’ll actually miss that loose feeling.

I’m sure you will Lora. You’ve already done the hardest part which is to decide to start!

I’m continually playing with my wedding ring as well! It’s falling off now though and that’s a bit of a problem.

I’m with you point for point.

    - I wear a jacket almost all the time. Used to sleep with a ceiling fan in the bedroom — no more.

    - Wedding ring — My wife took the opportunity for us to buy new rings last year. Since then, I’ve had to resize that after I nearly lost it swimming.

    - Clothes — I can tell you there are some awesome deals at Goodwill. I though I could wear my old 5x shirts forever — NOT! Constantly trying to wait on new clothes, but at some point, you’ve got to give in. For me, it’s been liberating, though. No more “fat man stores.” I hadn’t bought off the rack as an adult — 25+ yrs, so in some ways, I’ve gone overboard here.

    - Lost enough? Yeah, same here. When I tell people I want to lose another 30-35, they tell me I’ll be too thin. Uh, no.

    - Skin – GROSS!

    - Love the not recognizing part. Actually, the anonimity of walking in a crowd is strange, but refreshing.

No complaints here. I’ll take it over the old guy!

Most annoying thing is probably the conflicting responses, for me. Half of the people I see tell me I’ve gained weight, the other half tell me I’ve lost it.

Truth is, there has been no loss or gain, but a change in shape. I’ve now got massive shoulders, and my head looks really small. Bah.

  7. hanlieNo Gravatar on May 9th, 2008 7:40 am

They are all valid complaints I can’t wait to voice some of them myself!

I’m always cold now too! Even in the dead summer! Drives me nuts, and everyone thinks I am crazy running around in the AC with a hoodie on when it’s 90 outside!

also get alot of the “you’ve lost enough weight” I am close to goal, but why would I stop now? I’ve come so close, gotta get to goal!

I have never lost enough to tell that I am cold but that would be great (live in humid hot houston).

People telling you to stop losing weight is a common complaint that I have read through out the diet blogging community.

And I was going to recommend “Goodwill” but I’m in the states and don’t know if you have them. Maybe a consignment store of used men’s clothing?

Having to wear a belt because my jeans keep falling down.

About the “lack of fuel”. You might be struggling because your body is busy processing the smoothie, instead of concentrating on revving the legs. Whatever you ate last night (carbs?) should be enough to fuel you for an hour at 5am. Try heading out with an empty stomach.

But I am happy that you are losing weight, and I am, too. :D

With you on feeling the cold, I never used to at all, now I am a real wimp, electric blanket etc.
I’ve never worn a wedding ring.
I was lucky with the loose skin, I didn’t have any at all, I think because I lost the weight over a long period, maybe I just have high elasticity!
Clothes wise, I went through two major wardrobe replacements, but loved that part of it. I used to hate shopping for clothes, now I love it. My Dad also scored a whole lot of pretty new clothes out of it, as did local charities!
The people not recognising you is just plain fun I reckon – enjoy it.
Just ignore those who tell you to stop losing weight. You know what your goal is, what weight you will be happy with – don’t listen to anyone else. My wife was one of these who told me my goal was 10kg to low (75kg – she thought 85kg was okay), but I know best, as do you about yourself.

The best part of being cold now is that I don’t sweat when I go grocery shopping anymore. But I did keep the heat cranked up this winter just to be comfy.

You gotta improvise on the ring. Do what us girls used to do back in high school when we wore our boyfriends class rings…put a little tape on it ’til your down where you wanna be. Gotta get my rings and bracelets and watch resized too, but not ’til I’m finished.

I hit the thrift stores regularly when visiting my sister-in-law. This winter I only had 2 shirts that fit because that’s all I would allow myself. So when I went in public if they got bored with me it was their problem not mine. I did break down and buy new jeans when the others would start to fall down. And all my fat clothes are in bags in the garage waiting for the next visit to sister-in-law to give to the thrift stores.

Oh, you youngins!! At least the belly flab will disappear for you eventually. At my age the doctor said the only recourse I have when I’m finished is surgery. :-(

And hey, we all have to whine and complain to someone so why not here where everyone understands and love you.

Keep up the good work. We’re all very proud of you.

OMG… I was sitting outside in 70 degrees in the shade with a jacket on because I was cold. I thought I was crazy!

I get people telling me all the time that I don’t need to lose anymore weight. Honestly, I’m 5’3, and 157 pounds. I would like to be with out the overweight BMI.

I hate when people tell me that something is healthy to eat when it’s not, just so I’ll eat it. I know how to read a label…

I do love though when people tell me that I look great. But, does it mean I looked that bad before?

You are doing great! We’ll lose this last bit together!

  31. CammyNo Gravatar on May 10th, 2008 1:57 am

Ditto: being cold all the time, belly flab, people telling you to stop, and clothes that don’t fit.

I’ll add: glasses that slide off my face because the fat that was holding them in place is gone. :)

I love it all, but there are days….

Oh, man, it’s like you read my mind or something! A lot of those same things have bothered me about losing weight, too (though not so much with growing a beard, haha). It’s annoying having such a reduced wardrobe to choose from, and having to spend extra money (that I don’t really have) to get more clothes that fit, annoying being cold all the time when other people are complaining that the room is too hot, and all the comments that people have made about needing to stop losing weight (comments which started when I was still 200 lbs!) really started to grate on my nerves after a while. The worst thing of all is the loose skin issue – it’s embarrassing and often hard to deal with and accept that there are some things about my appearance that are never going to change (unless I were to take some drastic surgical route, which doesn’t hold much appeal) and I really and truly hate it.

But. In spite of all those annoyances, it’s still better this way, I think.

I hear you about being cold…I was wearing sweaters all winter over my dress shirts at the office…I never wore sweaters before.

I have had people warn me “not to lose too much weight” when I know I still have 30 pounds I would like to lose…

    Good luck on your race!

  35. kathrynNo Gravatar on May 10th, 2008 9:11 am

I’m with you on the cold thing. The first winter after I lost weight, I suffered so much. Also got a lot of colds etc. I thought that was just me but found out it happens a lot when you’ve lost weight. Plus I spend that winter in an over-air conditioned office — I used to work in about 20 layers of clothes.

My advise on the clothes is throw them out! Now! Even though it seems like a waste, you’ve got to feel good about how you look NOW. Even if you just pick up some cheap stuff to tide you over. Of course, if you’re like most guys then clothes shopping isn’t such a thrill. ps. get some thermal underwear while you’re there.

My biggest whinge about losing weight is that I no longer have the empty seat next to me on public transport. When you’re fat, people would rather sit anywhere else but lose weight and they want to sit next to you!

Maybe consider putting it on a chain that you could wear around your neck until you reach goal? Less likelihood of losing it that way, yet you don’t have to get it resized more than once. Though I suppose that depends on how your wife will feel about it not being on your finger.

And you are right to worry. I can remember when my father lost his in the Gulf of Mexico out fishing. Mom bought him another, but she was NOT amused, LOL!

I’ve felt each and everyone one of those things. Except the wedding ring. I was thrilled to finally be able to put it on again! What pissed me off was I felt like the poster child for weight loss. I was everyone’s hero, and everyone wanted to do it but not work for it. Yes, it all feels good in the beginning, but after a while you just want to tell people to leave you the hell alone! LOL I have people thrilled that I’ve gained some weight back. They told me I looked like a crackhead. Keep up the good work!

I’ve lost about 25lbs – I don’t think I was massive before but what I HATE is the comments basically telling me what a fat cow I was before. I don’t mind the “You’re looking good”, or “You seem much fitter” or “Have you lost some weight?”. But I’ve been getting comments like “WOW! You have lost SO much weight. Oh my God I can’t believe it”. Was I THAT bad before?? Another one was “God, what happened to you? Or did you just get sick of being ‘that’ way?”.

Also sick of the comments about stopping the weight loss when I’m still in the mid range of healthy weight and way above what I’ve been most of my life. I know what my ideal, healthy weight is.

Loose skin – mine really shows when I bend over. It looks like one of Grandma’s crocheted shopping bags. Eewww.

Great blog you’ve got and good for you getting fit!

  56. LeeNo Gravatar on January 30th, 2009 1:19 pm

Wow…those were perfect! I’m cold all the time now, and I’ve lost too much weight over too long a time to just wait to buy new clothes. I’ve lost 100 lbs over the last three years, and it kills me to go out and buy all new clothes every time winter or summer rolls around. I’m almost there, so here’s hoping this summer is the last one.

And I could not agree more with how frustrating it is when people tell you you should stop losing weight. About 20 lbs ago my mom started telling me that (and at the time I was only fresh out of the obese category and newly into overweight). And then last time I went home, she said she didn’t even recognize me anymore. A few days later, I pulled out my old drivers license, and she said, “Now that’s my son.” I’m sure she didn’t mean it to, but that one really stung. Feels good to vent a little bit.

I’ve also got another one to add to that list…I don’t know about you, but I’ve started many, many diets, including this one, with others especially my mom over the years, and then what happens when they fall off the wagon, and you keep going.

Or how about when you lose weight disproportionally, all from the top, all from the bottom, etc. I have bony, little shoulders, but my butt isn’t budging.
