A run in the fog

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I wanted to get my run out of the way early today as I had plans to do stuff in the afternoon.  So I set my alarm for 6:30 AM and what do you know at 6:29 my other alarm went off wanting a bottle!  So I got up, fed her and then headed out.

It was still black outside when I left and it was incredibly foggy.  After about 5 minutes the sun started to come up and the world was bathed in an ethereal sort of light.  It was rather spectacular truth be told.

I ran to just before Mission Bay and back.  It was a glorious run and there were plenty of other runners and cyclists out and about.  I felt a certain sense of kinship with all these people out exercising and it was good.

I wanted to do 10 km this morning and I managed to do 10.17 km in 1:01:40. I achieved a first today in that my last kilometer was my fastest one.  I’ve decided I need to start working up to negative splits. If only all my runs could feel as nice as this one.

There was only one problem with this run - my glasses fogged up totally.  I had to take them off and clip them to my shirt and run without them.  Surprisingly this was not a problem at all.

Once I got home and had my breakfast and then I took my family for a walk in Cornwall Park which is a really park that I have run in before.  We walked around One Tree Hill (which currently has no tree as some idiot chopped it down). I had my baby in her baby backpack.  We bought a really fancy stroller for her but she doesn’t like it much.  She loves the backpack as she can look around more easily and I think she likes the motion.  Unfortunately, she does get heavy rather quickly!

The excitement of the walk proved a bit too much and before long she was zonked out.

Our walk was about 3.5 kilometers and took about 40 minutes.  The park was full of joggers and walkers and it was great to see many families out and about.

One of the things that I really love about getting fit and losing a lot of weight is that I am keen and able to do these activities with my family.  In the past I would have avoided a walk like the plague, especially one like today which had a few hilly sections.  It was such a great feeling knowing that I’d already run 10km about an hour earlier and there I was happily hiking with a baby on my back and my wife by my side.  I’m truly blessed to be able to do these things now.

  1. Nice one. Reckon you’ll be in great shape for Run Auckland 5!

My run yesterday went right past where you took the photos. I find Cornwall Park has a bit of everything in terms of running: a hill climb, some off road, some flat straights. It’s great and no traffic lights to hold you up. :)

The waterfront looks like a really nice run for training. Haven’t done it but now I’m inspired to give it a go.

Actually, reading your post made me think of going there for a walk with the family!

  2. Right on Andrew. Running is very much for us, but the whole family benefits. Looking good bro!

  3. Your baby is so cute! And the aerial view of your run round the bay looks like a beautiful area.

I’ve found out that I can comment on your blog when I am at home on my own PC, but seem to be blocked at work (no idea why, but that seems to be the case!).

    Best wishes,
    Sharon

Thanks Sharon, I think she’s rather cute too. Maybe your boss has it in for me!

  4. What a great day! There IS a sense of kinship with others who are out exercising, isn’t there? I’ve had to learn how to let go of one handlebar in order to wave at passing joggers and cyclists. :)

Great photo of you and your daughter–one to treasure!

  5. You are doing well. I’m impressed with your weight loss and your commitment. Thanks for stopping by my blog and for pointing me to Laminator’s tips on hydration.

Thanks Bob. We’re all in this together.

  6. Nice picture, thanks for sharing.

I like getting exercise out of the way early in the morning. Seems if I don’t do it then, I have a tendency to skip it all together. Woke up early this morning myself for a ride on the elliptical.

AndrewENo Gravatar reply on June 2nd, 2008 7:16 pm:

I’d love to have an elliptical at home. Or a treadmill. Although, having said that, I have an exercise bike and a bike that rarely get used.

  7. I love that sense of community as well - used to get it with the people from all walks of life running, walking, biking, and skating around the Rose Bowl in Pasadena here in the States. Everyone at their own pace, but ultimately there for very similar reasons.

  9. What an awesome route you showed for your run! Makes me want to go somewhere less boring to do mine!

The great scenery does help. :)

  10. Hey Andrew,

That looks like a beautiful place to run.

That Kinship with other exercisers is universal. Not a day goes by on my daily runs were I don’t wave and talk with other runners/bikers.

    Keep it up.

  11. It is rather nice to have walks together as a family! :)

  12. There’s a lot to be said for that kinship. Do you find yourself having conversations with a whole different group of people? Do you drive by runners in your car and suddenly feel the urge to park and join them? Do you think back not that long ago and remeber what you might have thought about those folks and now you’re one of them?

AndrewENo Gravatar reply on June 6th, 2008 10:16 am:

Oh yes! I used to think they were crazy bastards but now I’m one of them!

  13. awww how nice! It sounds like you had a lovely run! I love good running days. I think the sun coming up was just the right sign :) cute baby
