Back inside the gym
If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!
It’s been a bit wet and nippy here in Auckland the last few days so I’ve been doing my running in the gym.
I’ve decided to mix things up a bit and get a bit of cross training in as well so I’ve been running 5Ks and then doing 30 minutes on the elliptical cross trainer. Before I started running I always used to find that the elliptical was very easy compared to running, especially in terms of getting the heart rate up. Now that I’ve been running for 5 months I’m actually finding the opposite. The running is dead easy but I have to work quite hard to get my heart rate up on the elliptical.
I’ve been slacking off from the gym a bit lately as I’ve been running outside. I think I’m going to make an effort to turn up the heat and go more often. Everyone keeps saying cross training is important after all.
I’m going to restart doing Mehdi’s 5×5 strength training program as I think I need to focus a bit on maintaining my muscles. I’ve been a bit running obsessed lately and have let all my other get fit activities slide. Well, no more! I’ll still be running obsessed but I’ll do the others as well. Just don’t mention my bike.

Yeah… your fancy new bike has been collecting dust since the day you picked it up…

I find the ellipitical burns more calories than anything else - maybe because I can really push myself since it’s low impact.

Good stuff. I’ve always enjoyed the elliptical myself.

Wow, you’re definitely on fire now! Way to go, Andrew!
You know, you could use your b-i-k-e to scout out new run routes.
(thanks for the nod–glad it sparked)

Getting back in the gym is always a good idea! The key is to balance your running and your strength training so you don’t get bored of either, and to maximize your gains.

I don’t consider myself a “gym” person per se; that said, so far I’m not exactly the king of exercise either. So I’m thinking about it. I think I’m going to try to find a few places with short trials to get a feel for them. The idea of a contract makes me shudder at this point.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been slack on the strength training side. Get out on the bike though, a bit of cross training really does lighten the strain on the legs and joints.

the more i run the less cross training i do. and i’m fine with it. i like running better than cross training anyway. i know a lot of people who swear by cross training, but to me it’s just a matter of what makes my body feel good.

Great thought on the weights. I’ve been leaning that way, too.
