Dead legs

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I had a funny run yesterday. I went to One Tree Hill as I wanted to do 3 circuits of the volcano as that would be about 10K. However, after one circuit my legs just didn’t want to go no more! It was really weird. I figured maybe I’ve done too much running as I’ve run every day this week so far so I decided to call it quits and stop.

To make up for the abrupt end to my run I did 40 minutes on the exercise bike instead. I probably should have gone and got the real bike out instead but… I didn’t. I’m good that way.

I went for a run in the Domain this morning and everything was back to normal. I was doing loops of the mile track that is there. I bumped into a former colleague who was walking to work but gave a wave and carried on running.  I almost got my car towed away as I parked in one of the few towaway parks that were there by mistake.  Luckily I finished my run before any overzealous parking wardens or towies arrived.

From next week I should be able to go to the gym earlier in the morning before work as my in laws are returning to the country today (they’ve been gone since January) and they will look after my baby 3 days a week. Grandparents start earlier than daycare does so that is great.  Hmm…I wonder if they’ll notice I’ve lost about 50 pounds since they left? We’ll have to wait and see. :)

  1. “I went for a run in the Domain”

Is that a rvirtual run in cyberspace, within your own domain name? (Excuse my horrendous lack of geographical knowledge - woops!).

Actually most of your post sounds like it is a spagetti western …

“Dead Legs” starring Andrew IGF, starting at One Tree Hill and ending at Domain with dead legs, we bring you the run that the legs could not take, the run to beat all runs ….. or ….

“40 minutes on the treadmill” but that title didn’t sound so great and Ennio Morricone refused to write a score for 40 dollars more.

Excuse me, it is late (nearly 2am in the UK) and I should not be up so late blogging, you can tell my brain is frazzled !!!

    Best wishes,
    Sharon

The Domain is a big park in the middle of Auckland. :)

  2. Dead legs don’t sound too great! It’s probably just overtraining I guess - make sure you give your legs a day off here and there! Just been reading The Great Fitness Experiment (http://thegreatfitnessexperiment.blogspot.com) where overtraining has resulted in low thyroid craziness - it’s hard to get a happy medium!

Thanks for that link! It’s a very interesting blog.

  3. Take care to get that all important rest. I read something recently saying that we only improve in the rest periods between the runs, no on the runs themselves. Interesting way to think about it.

Oh and I bet they’ll notice those 50 pounds!!!

They did and I did skip my rest days this week. I think I’ll reinstitute them and only run every alternate day. Cross training for me on the other days.

  5. Good on you for listening to your body yesterday and not pushing on. An easier day every so often won’t do any harm. Keep up the good running :-)

  6. Hmmm, I suppose it could be overtraining, but it’s also possible that there’s something sinister going on in the blogosphere. I had dead legs on Sunday, and I’ve read similar reports from other bloggers recently.

    :)

If the grandparents don’t notice the tremendous difference 50 pounds has made, I’m not sure I’d want them watching my child. :)

  7. I hate dead legs. It’s like running with cinder blocks on your shoes! I can’t wait to hear how they react to your 50 less p ounds!

  8. I’m sure they will notice and will shower you with compliments! I agree with Cammy’s post though…just in case they don’t notice…

I like coming back and reading your blog…it’s very inspirational to track your progress and see how well you’ve done. I’m into weight lifting and building muscle myself, but it’s a similar struggle so I can relate. Keep it up!

  9. I hate dead legs too, and I get them all the time when I’m out running with my dog. Is there anything you can do to make them go away?

Not run? But seriously I guess rest more seems to be the consensus.

  10. Dead Legs are the worst, especially if they don’t really hit until your a good few minutes into your run because there is no turning back.

Not enough rest has always been the cause when I get them.

Just out of curiosity how much is daycare a day in Australia?

Err…can’t speak for Australia (I’m in New Zealand) but mine is about $50 a day for the work day care.

  11. I’ve had the dead legs thing happen to me once. I wonder if its like hitting the hall where your body runs out of its carb stores?

Good that you are listening to your body - very sensible.

  12. as a high school xc runner, my coach told us that easy days are important to let the body recover from the hard training done the rest of the week.

  13. It does sound like overtraining to me. I am coming to the same conclusion that I need to have more rest days - but it is hard not to go for a run now. Like you, I should get the bike out more often too - but that is harder in the dark and wet of winter.

  14. That’s so cool that they will get to see all the weight you’ve lost! I’m looking forward to hearing about their reaction. :) And yes, grandparents are wonderful when it comes to taking care of their grandkids!

  15. Well, I think the change was very obvious! They even thought we were trying to lose weight because the airlines are talking about charging people by their weights. :P
