Was it worth it? YES!

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

My alarm went off at 5am this morning by letting me know she needed a top-up and a service. I got the bottle while my wife changed her. I decided to get up and not go back to bed as I had my alarm set for 5:45 so that I could be out the door by 6AM for my morning run.

I was really not too keen on my run this morning. My bed was calling me and it was raining and dark out. But I thought bugger this to that little voice inside my head that was telling me to put it off till later and put my shoes on and I was off.

There is something about running somedays that just makes every footfall a joy. I hadn’t been running more than 5 minutes before I was at peace with the world and filled with a sense of bliss. It was really nice. There was a gentle drizzle falling at times during the run and it kept me nice and cool.

I saw about 40 people doing a karate class out on the beach as I ran by Mission Bay which I thought was really cool.  The sun was just starting to come up and that point and I really wished that I had remembered to bring my camera along as it was rather picturesque.

I had a lot to reflect on during my run. I achieved a rather momentous (to me) milestone this week when I finally reached the point where I’ve lost 100 pounds. This didn’t come easy and I was reflecting upon how my life had changed over the last few years and generally speaking I think I have reached a point where I am content with my lot.  That doesn’t mean that I will stop trying to improve myself and my life however.  At one point during my run the song Was it worth it? by the Pet Shop Boys came on and I was thinking YES IT IS! :)

Anyways, back to my run. I did a long loop as you can see from the picture below:

I did 16.28 kilometers in 1:44:45.  I didn’t break any speed records but I did break my distance record. Parts of the run were very hilly but I just plodded along and didn’t walk at all which I was pleased with.

Thanks Karen. You say the nicest things!

  5. 16km! You are really getting through the miles! Good stuff.

I have a feeling you are going to do well for the race on Sunday. Have you thought about changing your entry to the 10km? You might find the 5 a little easy… ;)

    Slow down buddy!

  6. Wow, that’s impressive. I know how you feel about the first few steps. That’s how it sometimes is for my power walks. The fresh air, morning crispness, and quietness are what get me.

I walked for an hour this morning, (not quite as early as you; I left at 6:15am), but I love walking the morning, especially on the weekends.

    Keep up the good work…………………:)

One of the things that always gets me is that I’m out there and taking action. That has been very important to me over the last year or so.

  7. [...] Andrew! Was it worth it? YES! Andrew has reached a diet mile marker and lost 100 lbs… so [...]

  8. Remember when you first started down this road and there was that one person, (or maybe two), who you held up as representing what you hoped, one day, you too could achieve??? Well… *you* are one of those people for me. Thank you for constantly being an inspiration.

Thanks J2F! It’s really great being able to read everyone’s story and know that we are all in this together. :)

Its funny how one day you can LOVE exercise, and the next you have to drag yourself through every second. but good thing you got out of bed or you would have missed it!

also, im going to say bugger now. i dont know if its offensive for inarticulate Americans to steal your slang, but im doing it anyway.

  10. Nice run. Looks like a god route.

  11. Sometimes the exercise periods I dread most are the most rewarding! I’m glad you had that experience, too!

  12. Not sure what I can say that hasn’t alread been said.

You are truly in a groove — physically for sure, but maybe even more importantly mentally. It’s a great place to be. I can feel it in everything that you write.

  13. You certainly have come a long way! 100 piunds - amazing! More amazing though is your will to stay healthy and fit through your running! It’s people like yu that keep me plodding along!

  14. Oh boy can I relate to this post! 8-) Kudos to you for getting out there & doing your early morning run, & winning the war against your own internal resistance mechanism!

  15. Congratulations on 100 pounds!!! That is so amazing! And your outlook on everything is very admirable.

Don’t you love those early morning wake-up calls!?

Oh and that’s great that you pushed through your desire to stay in bed. Personally, I’ve found that the days I don’t want to run are some of the most rewarding. Nothing like being at peace with the world around you… what a feeling.

  16. There was a lot more complaining from you before you left, eh! :P But you came back all happy.
Of course, your darling daughter usually seems to know when you are off for a run and wants to get up early, too!

    She’s good that way. :)
