Lessons learned: Celebrate!

A quickie lesson today: Celebrate all your achievements. No matter how little or silly.
Losing weight consistently is damn hard work and we need all the encouragement we can get. Sometimes that encouragement has to come from ourselves and so we need to celebrate how well we are doing.
I break down all my goals into mini goals and whenever I reach one I celebrate it. The celebration may involve buying new clothes, a little victory dance or a boastful exclamation! One of the reasons I record my weight in pounds instead of kilograms is so that I have more milestones to celebrate. It’s brilliant.

I redid day 2 of week 01 of the 100 pushup challenge this evening. The program calls for 12, 12, 10, 10 and max (min10). I did 12, 12, 10, 10 and 20 for my max which I was really happy with. A search for muscles victory dance may have been performed but I did not get busted by my wife.
I’ve got high hopes that I will complete week 01 day 03 this time. I think doing the pushups in the evening has been brilliant. The only hazard is that my daughter came and pushed my head down while I was on my max set on Monday which killed all further efforts.

Can we have a video of the victory dance?
I’ve been totally inspired by your “mini-challenges”, so I’m looking at creating a list of my own.

I’m very pro celebrating. I reckon life chucks enough of the bad stuff at you, so you may as well make the most of the good stuff!

Excellent post Andrew. Celebrating isn’t something I have really done yet — but I think I will need to reward myself when I cross through the 300 barrier into the “two hundred and something” territory.
Thanks for the explanation as to why you record your weight in pounds as well. I’ve often thought weight loss must be a different concept “down under” if recording weight in kilos.

Oh yes you should!
Your push-ups progress is terrific! *high five*
I think I’m going to give the 100 push-up thing a try. Sounds kind of cool. I’d love to be able to do 100 push-ups straight.

I’ve learned over the course of my journey to set small, attainable goals (ones that won’t take me months and months to get too!), I remember when I first started it was like, my goal is 25lbs and I lost steam after awhile, because it seemed undoable. Once I learned to do 5lbs, or the next 5% or whatever, it seemed doable!
Great post Andrew.
I totally agree with you here. I used to be very apprehensive about celebrating little things because I always knew that in somebody else’s eyes it wasn’t that big of an accomplishment. I had to realize that everyone is not me, and that everyone doesn’t have to celebrate for me. I have to celebrate for me…and it really has made a difference. I drop a pound, I’m happy. I shave seconds off my pace, I’m happy. It works. Thanks for another great post.
I totally agree as well - In fact, this is something I need to work on. I tend to forget to celebrate I think, so I really think I’m missing out on a great motivator.
Thank you for the great post - such a good reminder of how important the little things are!
Fantastic!! Finishing with 20 is tremendous - you should be very proud. Can’t wait to read about the next workout….
