Warning strong wind on bridge

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I was woken up a few times by the sound of heavy, heavy rain in the night and I remember thinking Damn, I’m going to have to use the treadmill! It was really thundering down.

However, I was heading towards the gym this morning when I thought This weather isn’t really that bad is it? So, instead of doing a nice indoor run I headed off down the street.

Things really didn’t seem to be too bad during the early part of my run and I was very pleased with my decision.  However, I started to get a bit apprehensive as I approached the coastline and the electronic signs on the approach to our harbour bridge said “Warning, strong wind on bridge.” It can’t be that bad I said to myself as I blithely trotted on.

Oh boy, how wrong can one be?  As soon as I got into an exposed area my forward momentum slowed right down and I was having trouble staying on the pavement the wind was so strong.  To add insult to injury my city loop went very steeply uphill at that point.  My garmin reckons I climbed 900 ft but that seems excessive to me.

I managed to survive but had to resort to walking a few times.  It didn’t help that I felt certain internal rumblings and couldn’t find a bathroom for quite a while.

Overall I did 11.69 km in 1:15:46 at a quite leisurely pace of 6:29/km.  I walked at least a km of the loop so my overall running pace wasn’t too bad I guess.  This was definitely one of those runs that I did not enjoy.  I’m sure the next one will be better.  Two more months to Spring!

It normally is, but today it was just long and windy!

  3. You are putting me to real shame! Well done.

The weather has been putting me off getting outside. I’m inspired now - that and i’m getting increasingly nervous about Run Auckland 6…

  8. Oi!

  9. I love your optimism. “It can’t be that bad!?!” ;-) You sound a lot like me — Crazy enough to think you can run in any kind of weather! ;-) I’ve run in torrential downpours, heavy snow, subzero temperature, 98 degree heat, etc. What’s the word for these runs?! Ah yes, they’re “character-building”!!!!

From the sound of those winds, it’s a good thing you weren’t blown right off the bridge!

Glad to hear you made it back safe & sound!

Great job sticking it out in those conditions for 11.69 km! And with a delayed bathroom break too. Ouch! Were you running with your legs crossed for the last half of it?! ;-)

  10. I think it’s funny when the wind hits you and you feel as if you stop moving, but you are still running

  11. oh man … sounds like you had a real bad experience. i mean i myself know that the treadmill can be quite daunting, and we runners will avoid it at all costs , but i guess now you know that ” tis better to be bored then to be caught in a quagmire like that haha

  12. I cannot imagine how beautiful it must be to run in Auckland despite the weather condition. Those winds can be a real workout !!!
