Wholegrain foods are healther - they're less produced (if at all), contain better (and more) nutrients and are low-gi and therefore 'slow' carbs, which means less bloating and better energy levels, but you can't eat 'all that you want'. Calories are calories. If you eat enough of anything, and aren't active enough to work off the balance, you will gain weight. :)

But they are 'better' for you than the while equivalents. You can actually feel the difference after a meal - no bloating at all. Wholegrain pasta tastes identical, too - it's all durum wheat, after all. Just make sure it's 100 per cent wholegrain durum wheat, as above, and not just 100 per cent durum wheat. There is a difference.

One of the easiest ways to lose weight fast is to eliminate all 'white' foods from your diet - pasta, rice, bread, potatoes and anything that comes breaded, in pastry or in a dough. If you cut out dairy or reach for the low-fat option you will see a major difference, and quickly.

It's my understanding that you can eat all the 100 percent whole grain bread you want with no down-side whatsoever. It's totally win-win. Same for 100 percent whole grain pasta. So if you want to eat loads of bread, go for it. Just make sure it's 100 percent whole grain.

If cereal is your biggest vice I really wouldn't worry about it. One box, once a year? For your birthday!?

If you use skim milk your average bowl of cereal (40g serving) is about 200-250 kcals! You could have ten bowls a day and be within your RDA (assuming you ate nothing else).

I don't go quite as far as banning... I am allowed my one food vice (CEREAL!!) once a year - I buy a box for my birthday. I can never stop at one bowl - I'm terrible.

Fitness vice is using exercise as punishment rather than for health and vitality. I'm dreadful for over-exercising and then burning out and being miserable/useless for the rest of the day.

Fitness should be fun - this is why I love your posts about running, it reminds me of why I love it too!

In a positive sense, my main vice/addiction is obviously running, but I also suffer from very un-manly cravings for chocolate. I can go a few days without it, but, certainly at work, I like to have a smallish amount (at the very least) to get me by.

Otherwise, it's the usual things like coffee, although I don't consider that a vice personally. And a few beers a week never did anybody any harm. ;) Likewise cookies, ice cream, croissants, French fries, cheese toast, Chinese food and cheeseburgers! :D

Because of how I structure my 80-20 diet, it's never an issue for me to eat this stuff, because 80% of the week I'm eating clean. It works!

In no particular order mine are fresh ciabatta bread, belgian beer and running.

How's the recovery going by the way?

My vice is running, just like Nancy. I cannot go a day or two without running. The thing that I crave the most after my running in the morning are a bottle of Accelerade and Bagel with Peanut Butter.

My vice is running. I love it. I feel off by the third day off in a row on long weekends. I meant to do run on Sunday, but my sunburn massively got in the way. I'm glad to say that it's going away and I shouldn't even feel it by tomorrow. I squeezed in a quick 7 miles this morning. Maybe that's an addiction!
