Good run, bad run, great pushups

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I had a great little run yesterday evening.  My wife has been doing C25K in the gym but has started doing her runs in the evening outside instead.  This is because she has signed up to a fitness class through work and it’s on first thing in the morning (in her previous running time).  This has been brilliant as I’ve been getting to run with my beloved wife and it has been really nice so far.  Conditions were cold but perfect last night and we did a nice gentle 4 km walkrunwalkrunwalkrunwalk.

One of the very rewarding side effects of my decision to get fit and active has been seeing the effect I’ve had on people around me.  Quite a few of my friends and family are now pursuing healthy activites and eating better and it’s really nice when they tell me that my progress has inspired them to take action.

So that was the good run.

I did another run today.  I was aiming for about 10km but I ended up doing just over 11.  Having said that there was a fair patch of walking in there as my daughter’s stomach bug (oh, did I fail to mention that my poor little monkey has been chucking like a banshee) hit me during my run.  Let’s just say it was not my finest run and leave it there.

11 km in 1:14:37.

I also managed to do day 02 of week 03 of the 100 pushups program.  I did 27,19,19,15 and 30 (25 required).    That’s definitely the most pushups I’ve ever done in my life.

  1. I think when you can finish a workout while ill - as I did a few weeks back with quite a severe headcold, no sleep and feeling competely and utterly exhausted - it’s an important mental and physical breakthrough, and something you can refer back to when you’re struggling in a run (or race) further down the road.

In other words, good on you mate. :)

  2. You are right, I think everyone going through one hundred pushups challenge doing more than they ever done in one sitting, even in the first few weeks. I start week 4 today.

  5. I about died doing Day 1 of Week 3 of my pushups last night! Although I am amazed at how many I can do without stopping now! I think it’s working.

And stomach bug sounds like no fun! Make sure you take it easy!

Amen to that. That is one of the best rewards you could ever ask for. Okay, well maybe it comes behind the increased libido and endurance that comes from regular exercise. But it is at least a close second.

  7. You know, I’ve gotten to the point that I really need to just start over with the push-up challenge. I’ve focused on running so much that the push-ups have definitely fallen by the wayside. I’m glad you’ve been able to be such a positive influence in the lives of so many people!

  8. It’s so rewarding to know we’ve had an impact on those around us. Some people don’t want to hear it, but if the message is presented in the right way (and you apparently have done that), then people want what you’ve got. Good for you!

  10. Andrew …found your blog a few weeks ago when I was starting to run on the treadmill. I have lost 8lbs so far in 3 weeks. Have been following your progress. I started the 100 pushup program and just did day 1 week 3 yesterday and that was tough. I could not max but I will try again tomorrow. I also tried a light run today —not on the treadmill…OMG what a difference. I had to learn to pace myself more and control my breathing better…and I’ll be darned after about 15min I felt like I could go another hour ( JK). Then when I stopped I really felt it in my legs. WHat and awesome feeling. I can’t wait to run tomorrow for the real run.

Anyway the point of my comment is to let you know that I read you to keep myself focused on fitness. Thanks again and I will post more of my progress. :)

Way to go Pizza Dude! It’s brilliant running outside I find. Much more to distract you from the aches and pains.

It took me about 4 months before I felt I could breathe properly while running.

    That is so awesome!

I really love reading about you running with your wife. I walk with my dear hubby. We use to run, years and years ago. We were talking about it last night, so we may start the couch to 5K together.

I look forward to reading more of your posts… I’m adding you to my blog roll.

  14. I found your blog via Zen Habits a while back and really enjoy following your progress. Ive been amazed by how many people follow strict fitness regimes bcause sometimes I just struggle to fit in my runs. Id been away for four days and did a two mile run today(Ive been building up towards two miles for about six weeks) and it nearly killed me. Maybe I should try the c25k.
