No Long Run, 129 Pushups and a new challenge: Core strength

My long run has been postponed due to bad weather.  We’ve had a rather major storm hit us and there is just no way I want to be out running in the heavy (and cold) rain that we’ve been having today.  Hopefully the weather clears a bit by tomorrow morning so I can head out otherwise it’s going to be a very boring run on the treadmill!

I completed week 03 of the 100 pushups program today. I managed to do 30, 22, 22, 20 and then a stunning 35 (min 27 required) for a total of 129 pushups!  35 pushups is the most I have EVER done in a row so I’m rather pleased.  It just goes to show that putting in the hard work does pay off.  I’ve been on week 03 for three weeks now and to be honest I’ve gotten rather tired of doing the pushups at times.  However, achieving new milestones definitely makes it all worthwhile.

This leads me to my next challenge:

Steve (of 100 pushups fame) over at Run Bulldog Run has just completed the Essential Abs program.  I figure building a bit of strength in my core will help my running.  Well, that’s the theory anyway!

I’ve been meaning to start doing it as well but the thought of doing ab workouts didn’t fill me with delight.  However, I’ve seen dramatic improvements in my strength by doing the hundred pushups program so today I bit the bullet and started.

Week 1:

Reverse Crunch
Crossover
Crunch: feet first
Opposite arm/leg raise

Workout #1 (Monday) – 12 reps of each exercise
Workout #2 (Wednesday) – 13 reps of each exercise
Workout #3 (Friday) – 14 reps of each exercise

I have to admit that after the workout I discovered I had muscles in places I didn’t know had muscles.  Not visually mind you.  The muscles are implied by the aches and pains.  Surely fat can’t feel sore?

Good for you. I have been doing core exercises along with the pushups and running and weight lifting. It kinda blurs my weight loss because I think I am gaining some muscle too ….so don’t be suprised if you gain a little.

Gonna run my first 5 k in two weeks any advise?…I Just ran about 2.2 miles today and did not feel too bad.

    PD

Number one tip is to enjoy it! My number two tip is to not start too fast. I always find that the atmosphere makes me run really fast in the beginning and then the second half I am slow.

    Hey Andrew,

Good luck on Week 4 of the push ups (not as severe as week 3 in my opinion, so it might not be as much of a chore) and of course with Essential Abs plan. I think you’ll enjoy this one!

Today I’ll be starting my repeat of Week 5 of the push ups and I’m also going to go back to Week 5 of the abs plan as a maintenance project.

Thanks for the links to my site :)

Wow – great progress! 35 push-ups in a row really does indicate to me that this works. I’m restarting, yet again, tomorrow. I have all kinds of excuses, but none of them are really holding water …

    Thanks for the inspiration!

Ahh, like good old Stephen said after his first ever visit to the gym… “I’m discovering all the muscles I didn’t know I have, ’cause they all hurt!”

Boy… now, like you, I know how that feels, too :P

Ack! You passed me on the pushups. It took me a YEAR to get to 30 and you blew past me like I was doing a plank.

    Way to go! :)

I’m with you on the weights program. I’ve been doing group weight program at the gym and have seen dramatic results in a very short time.

    Good luck with this program.
