A run with a podcast, my wife loves to run, Sheamus has a competition

The bad weather has continued here in sunny Auckland so I did my 10K run in the gym today.

Instead of listening to music I listened to a Phedippidations podcast.  You can find them here. It was about how we are designed to run without shoes and that wearing shoes actually damages our feet.  That may be so but I think I’ll stick to my shoes for now.  I think the podcast is actually better than music as you have to focus more so the tedium of the treadmill is not quite as oppressive.

I did a few fartlek sessions where I sped up quite considerably for 200m then slowed back down for 200m and so forth.  Hopefully that helps to build a bit of speed stamina.

My wife has become addicted to running as well. It’s been really nice running with her while she does her C25K sessions.  She did her run in the gym this morning after her exercise circuit which was rather amazing to me as she is normally absolutely buggered after that.  She must have been really keen to run today.  Visit her site and cheer her on!  And yes, she is working on a guest post to give her perspective on my fitness quest. :)

Sheamus has a competition going on at the moment at his site.  He has an aim of running for 365 days straight and he’s doing pretty well so far! He’s just set a new personal best for the 5K so go along and cheer him on!

UPDATE: The lovely Marshmallow has helped me solve the disappearing comments situation.  I think it’s fixed now.  My openid plugin was sending comments into the ether so it’s been deleted.

Oh man, 365 days straight? That would be brutal. I think I would be happy to do a week straight.

Now I’m the queen of overtraining, but running for 365 days in a row? I think that’s plain nutty. So I don’t think I can support Sheamus’s competition :-(

You’re very lucky to have someone so close to you that is making strides to improve their fitness. Not all of us have such a luxury.

Good on you for adding the Fartlek– I think you’ll find that in time it will give you a bit of a speed boost. Also, those sorts of intervals are great for fat loss programs generally, so it is win win!

I love working out to podcasts. You are right about it upping the entertainment factor. It works best on the treadmill tho where you have to keep your pace. Outside, I get all distracted by the show and slow down:)

Yay for your wife!! And Seamus? Don’t know about the never-taking-a-break thing. I worked out every day for 3 years (compulsive much) and am PAYING for it now.

Okay, let’s see if it is fixed. If you can see this, I guess we all hail Marshmallow’s IT skills (maybe I should give her a job).

365 days of running. That’s dedication.

As for me, I’m still stuck running 4.5km three times a week- I just can’t get beyond it at the minute. Lucky you having a running buddy with your wife.

I need to start doing the podcasts. That is a great idea, sometimes music just doesn’t cut it.

Congrats to your wife’s new addiction, it is fun to have shared hobbies.

    Go Sheamus!

Yah I don’t quite think I could run that many days straight. My body would give up on me by week 2 I’m pretty sure lol.

Glad you got your run in. How do you like running on the treadmill compared to outside?

Love to hear the wife is addicted to running, it’s so easy to do!

I agree completely regarding podcasts versus music on the treadmill/stair-machine. It certainly makes the time go by a lot faster.

Your commitment to running is inspirational- great going!

Your wife has the right idea. It’s very addicting. Even more addicting when you have a steady wave of good runs!

Just thinking about running outside without shoes makes me cringe- even on the beach. I’ve become such a wimp.
