My longest run yet

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I’ve been a bit quiet the last few days but haven’t really had much to say. :)

On Friday I did a 10 km run on the treadmill in the gym.  Unlike my Thursday run (that was nice and easy even though it was a hill workout) this one sucked big time.  My legs felt heavy and it was a real struggle to nut out the 10K.  I suspect it was because I had done the hill workout the day before and my body needed a bit more rest.

I also popped in to see the physio with regards to the pain in my arm and after much prodding and poking he reckons I’ve managed to pinch a nerve.  Funnily enough he described the exact way I would have done it without me really telling him how I did it so he must know his stuff.  He gave me a set of stretching exercises to do and I’m to report back for a followup on Tuesday.  No pushups allowed for now.  I can’t say I’m too disappointed as I’ve been getting heartily sick of pushups but I will restart my program once I can.

Saturday was a rest day and I spent most of it tagging along with my wife and her friends.  She’s got some friends visiting from overseas and they had lots of gossip to exchange.  It was quite nice in that they hadn’t seen me for quite a while and jaws were dropping left, right and centre.  I think I managed to convert one of them to running as they asked my wife for details about C25K.  We’ll have to wait and see if they get inspired to actually do it.

This morning (Sunday) dawned wet and miserable but both my wife and I wanted to get our runs in.  She’s in week 09 of C25k so had to do a 30 minute run and I wanted to get my long run in.  It’s really nice to run with her so I did her run with her and then continued on once she was done.

We drove out to the waterfront and then ran along the docks and around the Hilton hotel.  Then back to the car.  The rain was threatening for most of the time and about midway in it came down quite heavily for about a minute.  Luckily we could run under shelter for a bit as there were plenty of shop awnings.

I left her at the car and then carried on.  I went up through Parnell and into the Auckland Domain.  Then I headed out through Newmarket up to Market Rd.  I ran to the end of this and then the rain started to crash down and I was soaking wet.  It didn’t really ease up until I got home but I have to admit that I really enjoyed it even though conditions were dreadful.  There is something about being out running that just makes me feel alive.

I did my longest run ever at 18.73 km.  I didn’t really intend to run that long but I was just enjoying myself.  It took me 1:47:36 which works out to 5:45/km which is surprisingly fast (by my standards) for a nice easy run.

I got home and had a nice big peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwhich and it was good!

My half marathon is about 11 weeks away now and I think all this running should help me do well.[ad#default]

  1. Great job! Thing is, that essentially is a half-marathon – I’m surprised you didn’t grind out the last 1.27km just to know that you’ve got it done. Or are you saving the full distance for the race?

I’ve been enjoying plenty of almond butter and banana sandwiches on wholewheat toast lately, usually with half a handful of mixed nuts – they’re really nutritious and a great energy source.

I thought about it but decided that over enthusiasm could lead to injuries. Besides, the rain was absolutely pelting down.

  5. I can’t wait to lose some more weight, then I am going to start running. I’m still too heavy at the moment and my ankles not my strongest part, along with my size 8 (US) feet, small for a 5.11″ frame, ha ha

    Take care,
    Andrew

Thank you for all your encouragement!

You are not that far off. I weighed about 260 odd pounds when I started.

  6. Wow great distance progress – it is such a great feeling to be able to run that far!

And good for you on the jaw-dropping. I’ve recently had some friends mention that they were really surprised to see how much I’d lost as well, and it sure does wonders for your motivation. :)

  7. I hate those runs that just suck, and we all have them too. Mine this morning was hard, although didn’t suck, but it’s amazing to me, some days can seem so easy and other days so hard. But I love every minute!

congrats on your longest run yet!

  10. Hi Andrew, Just stopping in to say hello. I came across your site in my endless Blog Travels. Very inpiring progress you have made! I am ready to start Week 3 of C25K, and a true newbie to running – I have never been a runner EVER. It is going well so far… I just can’t wait to get to that base line 30 minute run, somehow that will make be feel more like an ‘official’ runner! Feel free to stop by my site and I will be checking in here often!

    Keep up the great work!

  12. I just got over here to read about your long run … that’s great! Yeah, You’ll be ready for the half marathon, what with your weight loss and training … you’re on top of it.

I hear what you’re saying about push-ups. That just happens to be the way that they measure our upper body strength in the Army, so it seems like a good idea to find a fun program to increase them.

  13. Way to go Andrew! Doesn’t it feel so good when your body just *does* something you didn’t know you were capable of? Those long runs that just happen – man, that’s why I keep running. Talk about endorphin rush!
