Mind over matter

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I did my 10K tempo run in the gym today. What I do is set the treadmill at a certain speed and then up it by .1 km/h every week. That should help me increase my speed gradually. I did 10K in 49:40 which is slightly faster than last week.  I’m going to have to transition these runs to outside so that I get used to keeping a certain pace but they should help build up some endurance.

These faster runs are not hugely difficult but they do remind me how I felt during C25K. I know I can do it but that little voice inside me starts to offer these very reasonable suggestions:You ran 6km yesterday.  You only need 4 km today to complete the 10.  You don’t really need to run this quickly.  What does that red stop button do?

The run definitely becomes a game of mind over matter.

Lack of sleep = a shorter than planned run & I won!

I only got about 4 hours sleep last night due to my beloved little daughter waking up at regular intervals for some reason.

As such, the run today was rather hard.  I wanted to do a 10K tempo run but very early on in the piece I decided to make it an easy run.  Then I decided to make it a 5K easy run.  I got to 6.3K and decided that enough was enough and decided that I would do 10K tomorrow rather than the 5K I had planned.  It will all work out in the end I’m sure.

I was also a winner in Steve’s (Run Bulldog Run) competition.  The prize is the great new book Dean Karnazes: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days which was released yesterday. I’m really looking forward to reading it.

And everyone seemed quite interested in my lunch last week, so for your viewing pleasure here is this week’s lunch:

Some Japanese noodles, carrots, cashews, onions, garlic, courgettes and sundry other vegetables.

I also had another visit from my physio and he’s ordered another week off the pushups.  Bugger.

Weigh in: Green is good

My official weight is down to 91.03 kgs (200.7 pounds) on PhysicsDiet this morning. That means I’m down 107 or so pounds now.

I had a pretty good week eating wise and a great weekend. For the first weekend in a long time I actually kept my scale weight below my PhysicsDiet weight.

If you look at the graph the data points are my actual scale weight and the objective at the moment is to keep them below the trend line as that brings the trend line down. If the shaded area is green then I’m below the line. When it’s red I’m above the line.

My longest run yet

I’ve been a bit quiet the last few days but haven’t really had much to say. :)

On Friday I did a 10 km run on the treadmill in the gym.  Unlike my Thursday run (that was nice and easy even though it was a hill workout) this one sucked big time.  My legs felt heavy and it was a real struggle to nut out the 10K.  I suspect it was because I had done the hill workout the day before and my body needed a bit more rest.

I also popped in to see the physio with regards to the pain in my arm and after much prodding and poking he reckons I’ve managed to pinch a nerve.  Funnily enough he described the exact way I would have done it without me really telling him how I did it so he must know his stuff.  He gave me a set of stretching exercises to do and I’m to report back for a followup on Tuesday.  No pushups allowed for now.  I can’t say I’m too disappointed as I’ve been getting heartily sick of pushups but I will restart my program once I can.

Saturday was a rest day and I spent most of it tagging along with my wife and her friends.  She’s got some friends visiting from overseas and they had lots of gossip to exchange.  It was quite nice in that they hadn’t seen me for quite a while and jaws were dropping left, right and centre.  I think I managed to convert one of them to running as they asked my wife for details about C25K.  We’ll have to wait and see if they get inspired to actually do it.

This morning (Sunday) dawned wet and miserable but both my wife and I wanted to get our runs in.  She’s in week 09 of C25k so had to do a 30 minute run and I wanted to get my long run in.  It’s really nice to run with her so I did her run with her and then continued on once she was done.

We drove out to the waterfront and then ran along the docks and around the Hilton hotel.  Then back to the car.  The rain was threatening for most of the time and about midway in it came down quite heavily for about a minute.  Luckily we could run under shelter for a bit as there were plenty of shop awnings.

I left her at the car and then carried on.  I went up through Parnell and into the Auckland Domain.  Then I headed out through Newmarket up to Market Rd.  I ran to the end of this and then the rain started to crash down and I was soaking wet.  It didn’t really ease up until I got home but I have to admit that I really enjoyed it even though conditions were dreadful.  There is something about being out running that just makes me feel alive.

I did my longest run ever at 18.73 km.  I didn’t really intend to run that long but I was just enjoying myself.  It took me 1:47:36 which works out to 5:45/km which is surprisingly fast (by my standards) for a nice easy run.

I got home and had a nice big peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwhich and it was good!

My half marathon is about 11 weeks away now and I think all this running should help me do well.

Routine hill workout

I did a hill workout today.  10 km in 56 minutes on the treadmill.  The only thing that I found interesting about the workout was how routine 10 km has become.  In the past a 10K run was a HUGE thing.  But now it’s becoming routine.  I find myself feeling a bit ambivalent about that.  On the one hand I’m quite impressed with myself and on the other hand it’s a little sad that I’ve lost the thrill of being able to do a 10K. Oh well, that’s the price of progress I guess.

Having said that, the thrill of actually being in training for a half marathon is immense!  I guess once I complete that I’ll have to settle for the thrill of training for a marathon!

I’ve hurt my arm (getting up from my desk of all things) so I’m off to see the physio later today.  This means I haven’t restarted the pushup challenge as whenever I extend my arm I get a stabbing pain in my wrist.  I suspect it will get better with rest but the physio is free (workplace will pay) so I might as well go.

Talking to the past & a quick 10K

The lovely Marshmallow (and also Aischai) has tagged me with this meme:

What’s something you’d love to say to your younger selves of 2, 5, 10, and 15 years ago? (Doesn’t necessarily have to be the same thing each time.)

2 years ago (August 2006), age 32

I was going through a rough patch two years ago.  My department was being restructured and we were losing half our staff.  I was relatively safe but the environment at work was pretty toxic.  I’d been exercising pretty well and eating well but I used this situation as an excuse to give it all up and return to my bad habits.

My message to myself: “There is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Don’t give up.

5 years ago (August 2003), age 29

Things were going pretty well in my life 5 years ago.  I was engaged to be married.  I’d lost about 35 kgs and was relatively fit and healthy all things considered.

My message to myself: “Don’t get complacent.

10 years ago (August 1998), age 24

I was pretty lost about ten years ago.  I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I was going.  I was massively overweight and used to eat extremely unhealthily.  Exercise was a forbidden topic and in hindsight I was probably suffering from depression.

My message to myself: “Take action.

15 years ago (August 1993), age 19

Life was pretty good at age 19.  I’d fractured my neck the year before and had been out of action for a few months and sort of lost any exercise habit I may have had.  I didn’t realise it at the time but this was where my weight gain problem started.  I developed a sedentary lifestyle which didn’t help either.

My message to myself: “Eat less, move more.

It’s always interesting reflecting backwards.  Looking back there are always things you would want to change.  Yet, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t be where I am today or who I am today.

If I stop and realistically assess my life then I have to conclude that I’m truly blessed in life.  I’m relatively fit and healthy.  I have a loving, funny, brilliant wife.  A darling daughter.  A job I love.  Relative financial security.  If I had to have a do over I might avoid some of the unhappy years but I might not end up in such a happy place.

So I think focusing on the past is not the way to go.  It’s helpful to reflect upon it and acknowledge the influence it has had on my life but the past is the past.  There is nothing that can be done about it.

My future will be a fit and healthy one.  That’s what I can control.  Touch wood!

And now for a return to our regular updates:

The rain was back with a vengeance this morning so I did my run in the gym.  I wanted to do a tempo workout today so I decided I would try and do 10K in under 50 minutes.  The first 6 km were relatively easy but by 7 km my mind started playing tricks on myself.  I started telling myself that if I slowed down to my normal easy pace I’d still set a fastest 10K ever time and so forth.  But I was determined to keep going and a huge part of that determination was the thought of writing this up on my blog!  The blog is such a great tool for motivation I reckon.

Anyways, I met my goal.  I did 10K in 49:58 which is under 50 minutes and my fastest 10K ever. :)

Weigh-in Monday

The weightloss has progressed quite nicely this week.  I suspect it may have quite a lot to do with the large amount of running I’ve been doing.  I have done just over 100 km over the last two weeks!  I’m now 106 pounds down.  That number is still slowly ticking over so I’m pleased with that.

I had a bit of a break with the pushups after failing miserably with week 05 and will restart this week.

I’m also about to start week 03 of the abs program that I got from Steve.  Speaking of which he’s having a competition.  Go and check it out.

Week 03 involves the following:

Hip Up
Reverse Crunch
Crossover
Oblique Crunch
Crunch: legs up
Crunch: feet first
Superman

Workout #1 (Monday) - 12 reps of each exercise
Workout #2 (Wednesday) - 13 reps of each exercise
Workout #3 (Friday) - 14 reps of each exercise

Last week was a good week and hopefully this one is as good.

8 on the 8th 08!

Today I ran an 8 mile race.  Crowd support was non existent.  Drink stations were unmanned.  And I felt great.

Nancy over at Notes of a Non-Runner organised a virtual event in which runners all over the world ran 8 miles on the 8th day of the 8th month in 2008.

For some reason I entered the ‘hilly with very strong winds’ course.  It was hilly as I was checking out some quick routes for the volcano challenge so I ran around two of the other volcanoes in the challenge.  Earlier in the week I checked out the other 3.

I started off at work and walked up to the Auckland Domain to warm up.  I then headed out towards Mt Eden and ran up (uphill into the wind!) to check out an alternative route up to the top.  After that I headed out towards One Tree Hill and ran around it.  Conditions weren’t really great for running as the wind was very strong but I enjoyed it nevertheless.  After One Tree Hill I ran home and funnily enough I hit 8 miles as I turned into my street.  I’d mapped it out on g-maps beforehand and had gotten 8.4 which I thought would be enough (I wanted a little margin as I’d have hated to come up short).

I was listening to another great podcast by Steve Runner and one of the points he made was how great the online running community is and I have to agree.  These virtual events really help you to feel connected and that you are part of something bigger.  It was great.

I’m going to be cheeky and claim provisional 1st place for this event as I live in New Zealand and we are GMT +12 which means that I probably completed the event before it was even the 8th in the rest of the world.  Of course my time won’t be fastest but hey, since when was time important!  Speaking of which, 8 miles in 1:17:23.
