Weigh in: Stasis
If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!
This week I gained .32 kilograms which is not too bad.
However, over the last 30 days my weight has remained static and as you can see from the chart below I’ve only had 1 week in the last month where my eating has been reasonably good.
If you look back to when I started using PhysicsDiet to track my weightloss in March you can see an interesting pattern in that I haven’t really lost any weight since the end of June.
Don’t get me wrong - this post is not about doom and gloom:
- I’m fitter than I’ve ever been. I can run well over 20K at will now. Exercise has become something that I have to have in my life. No more sitting on the couch of doom for me.
- My clothing sizes have shrunk down from 4XLs to Ls - which I personally think is brilliant!
- My friends and family have also been embracing a healthy lifestyle - which is amazing. It’s great to see my determination rubbing off on people.
I know why I haven’t lost weight. I’ve been eating too much. Eat less - move more should be my mantra. Well I’ve been moving more but eating more as well. Hence the increased fitness but static weight.
I would like to get my BMI down into the normal range. To do that I need to lose another 15 pounds. I’m going to commit to doing that which means I need to cut out the excessive snacks. I also need to remain properly fueled for my runs so it’s going to be a slow process but having said that I’m not in this for a quick fix. My healthy lifestyle should be just that- a lifestyle. My core diet is healthy. Extremely so as a matter of fact. I’ve just allowed the cookies and cake to creep in a bit too much. It’s amazing how quickly moderation can turn into just one more!
Anyways, no more. I’m back on the straight and narrow and I’m hoping to report in with nothing but green for my next few weigh-ins.
Hopefully you’ll all continue to cheer me on!

100% correct in saying its a lifestyle rather than diet - i.e. looking at the long term view.
I think the progress you’ve made going from 4XL to L to being able to run 20+km is pretty incredible.
I’m sure you’ll be busting through the plateau…

I need to do the same thing Andrew. Cutting out the extra snacks and my weight will drop, but no rush as you said it is a lifestyle thing… Plenty of time…
It is fantastic that you have got so many other people involved in a healthier lifestyle as well.

I’ve just gone through the same thing Andrew - after I started tracking my food intake over the last week, I realized I’ve been eating in ‘maintenance’ mode, instead of to lose.
I’m hopeful that the diligence pays off for my weigh in this week! (It’s looking promising wink wink).
The commitment we all make here is for ‘lifestyle’ - LIFE, long term…as long as you stay on the scale and make the adjustments when needed - that’s what matters. It’s worked in your favor thus far! You’ve accomplished quite a lot!

The thing I love best about you Andrew is your great attitude. Most people hit a plateau and freak out or give up. You are just so very sensible about it. Which is why I know you are going to get to your goal! keep up the great work - you’ll get there:)

Keep the faith, Andrew.
Sometimes reading your blog is like looking in a mirror. You’re training for a half marathon; I just completed my first half marathon last weekend. While your overall loss is more impressive, your goal is 187 pounds pounds; mine is the same. (We’re both BMI-focussed, so we must be the same height.)
I hit a plateau right around 200 pounds for over two months, despite my miles adding up and my body slimming down. (Sound familiar?) Just recently, I’ve broken through to 195 pounds.
Keep the faith. You’ll get there. We’re still cheering.

Of course we’ll keep cheering!
Look forward to getting to the goal weight, cos then you can eat more and keep exercising the same, in order to maintain.

Perhaps you have been gaining muscle mass while losing fat over that period of time, resulting in a static weight? I don’t know if you do a lot of weight training, but I was working out about three times per week with weights at the beginning of my weight loss attempt back in January, and my weight did not budge for a few months until I had built up enough muscle mass to start burning fat. Just a thought! On the snacks front, I’m with you there. I am having a lot of trouble not getting something crappy during that afternoon lull where I crave something small and sweet… I do admire your objectivity and how you stay positive because, the fact is, you have accomplished a tonne as far as healthy lifestyle goes!

4XL to L? That’s awesome.
20km at will? That’s mind boggling.
Just another 15 pounds to go? Wow, that’s a good feeling. That’s a really good feeling.
I can’t even fathom that, really.

It’s great that you’re not being hard on yourself. You know now that you can maintain your weight when you’re at your destination. All things considered, this probably wasn’t a bad “resting spot.”

Andrew — you’ve done amazingly well and you’ve just hit a bit of a plateau. All of your hard work is paying off and it’s cool if you enjoy yourself a bit — both the exercise and a cookie or two (but not three or four.)

Hey, you’re fit and you have some small changes to make. You’ll make them! You’ll get past the plateau and get to where you want to be. I have no doubt.

If I can just stay away from snacking before bedtime and having a consistent workout routine I’d be fine. How did you do it? What do you snack on?
