That’s not Andrew

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I had lunch with a friend yesterday and he said something I found quite funny:

“When I look for you in a crowd my mental image is still the big fat white guy. You’re harder to find now.”

Apparently I don’t stand out in a crowd any more. What a shame. :)

I only had time for a 5K run today. I’m going to get in a 10K session tomorrow. 1 month to go until my half marathon!

  2. I recently attended a retirement party for a guy I worked with for about 17 years. I still work for the same company, but in a different building. Most of the guys there were from my old building and I had a lot of fun with the ones I hadn’t seen in a few years. The looks on their faces were priceless when they finally realized who I was! Evil? Maybe a little, but we all laughed over it.

It can be quite entertaining not being recognized!

  4. Geeky question — I love your tag cloud — I have a static one — I saw something like this from the visual thesaurus — what plug in are you using? Can I ask?

  5. Hahahahaha! Though shame on your friend, I would never use your size as an identifying factor - I prefer to use your chesire cat grin to spot you; and that’s something you’ll never lose :-D

  6. Don’t bother :) man should not be proud to stand out from a crowd by being ‘fat white guy’ ;)

There are many more better options ;)

  7. One of my best friends has lost about 40 kg in the last year (not in a healthy way unfortunately) and I am surprised every time I see her. She’s a completely different person… I think I may just write a blogpost about that.

  9. That’s cool! It’s like the day I was waiting for my niece, scanning the crowd for a kid, when I realised she was the lovely young woman walking straight to me. I hadn’t noticed before that she grew up!

  13. Nice to not stand out. I would have never considered that a victory until I read it. How nice it will be to be like everyone else.

BTW I also got a kick out of the “I only had time for 5k today”. Remember when 5k was something that was just unthinkable.

Great job Andrew! Keep it up. I have no doubt that you will be ready for your Half.

  15. It has occurred to me that if I succeed in my weight loss goals I will also be less identifiable. At the moment it’s very easy for people to point out “the big blonde woman” …. but how to describe me and find me once I become just another average sized blonde(ish) average woman …?

I wonder if this is why I have been staying extra large + uniquely identifiable all these years? ;-)

  16. When your friend used to look for you in a crowd did he describe you to people as a “big fat white guy” or was he just thinking that in his head?

Things that make you go hmmm….

While it’s great that you have lost so much weight you have a different physical shell, I would like to think that your friends think of you simply as Andrew, a person whom they know and love for who you are and not what you look like.

  17. Standing out is highly overrated. :) I’m having the same “problem” in that friends just look right past me.
