A not so good run

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

A funny thing happened to me when I went to the gym to get changed for my run today.  I pulled out my running shirt and what do you know?  I’d grabbed the wife’s shirt instead of mine.  The dangers of having a his and hers outfit I guess.

Anyway, this meant that I couldn’t do my run at the gym so I decided to get a run in straight after dinner.  I also decided I needed to do it quite quickly as I wanted to get back to help put my little monkey to bed. Big mistake.

I headed out way too fast and blew up after 3km and had to walk for quite a bit.  It was a bit embarrassing when another runner went past me while I was squatting down trying not to chuck up.  Anyway, lesson learnt.  No fast runs straight after dinner.

Having said that I still did my 5K in 28:53 for an average pace of 5:44/km.  Considering I walked for about 4 minutes I’ll take it!

  1. Yes, running after food is not such a good idea. I also struggle if I eat differently - I think that may have been my problem in Burnie as I had different muesli for breakfast?

  2. Running too soon after dinner affects me, but it makes me want to squat for different reasons! (Eeewwww!) I try to wait about one and a half hours before attempting an after dinner run. Personally, I try to avoid them like the plague!

  4. I haven’t managed to upchuck during a run but I’ve sure had my moments of being on the side gulping mouthfuls of air while the walkers pass me. Even with your walking thats an enviable pace.

  5. About a week ago I had a miserable run, kinda like yours. I wasn’t feeling well, started off to fast, and ended up walking and trying not to throw up, not pretty!

Best thing? You know that your next run will be better!

  6. They won’t let you run topless at the gym or something?! I’m kidding really, and totally feel your pain about running after eating. Nice pace too: you must have been flying before having to walk!

I was really thinking the same thing…can’t go without a shirt at the gym? I’m sure you’re looking pretty buff now!

  8. Running on an empty stomach is better for me too. Thats a good time though considering the “blowout”.

  9. Ouch. Not good. So what’s the option when you have to run after dinner and time is limited? Do you feel as good with an easier run? (Thinking of my equivalent, which would be a lighter workout.)

  10. Hi Andrew,

I admire what you are doing to get fit. I am on a health and fitness journey also but still along way behind you. You story made me laugh and reminded me of the time I was in such a hurry to get to the gym that when I arrived I was wearing my house slippers.

I there are occasions when I am a complete plonker, my wife would say more than occasionally.

  11. LOL! I have done that too with my husbands clothes….I least I could wear them even though they were too big.

Nice job getting the run in even though it wasn’t the best run.

  12. Next time just wear your wife’s shirt… tell me that wouldn’t motivate you to speed up and get out of there!

  13. What, you mean you weren’t going to wear your wife’s shirt? ;-) LOL. Would people have known the difference since it was his & hers? ;-)

But seriously, I think we’ve all done the mistake of running too soon after dinner. So no worries. Plus, you still did the workout, which counts in my book. And, more to the point, you learned from the experience, which is the important part!

Hope you have a better run next time. As they say, tomorrow’s a new day!

  15. I’ve done that before, I ran less than an hour after a big dinner. 2k In cramps and then boom up came the dinner.

You should have worn your wife’s shirt :)
