A fun day out

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

I’ve had a good day today.  Firstly, I did a good 5K run this morning before work.  5K in 24:36.  I was quite pleased with that.  Work finished at lunchtime today as I got invited along to my wife’s department’s Christmas Party.  I know it’s only October!  But key people are not going to be around during November and December so they decided to hold it early this year.

We went to the Auckland Luge and it was a lot of fun.

I’m pleased to announce that I won 7 out of 7 races we had. ;)  One of the nice things about losing a lot of weight is that there wasn’t any nervous worrying about whether or not I’d fit in the carts or things like that.  I’ve spent a lot of time worrying about that kind of thing in my time but never again!

In other news, I’ve been asked what my time goal for the Half Marathon next week is.

All the guides say don’t set a time goal for your first HM.  Just focus on finishing.  Having said that I’m fairly convinced that I will be finishing (touch wood) seeing that I’ve comfortably done more than the HM distance in training.  So I’m going to tempt fate and aim for a time goal.

Two hours was my initial goal but I should be able to beat that I think.  I’ve plugged my recent race pace and some of my faster 5K times into the various running calculators and they give me about 1:55ish.  I’d love to crack 1:50 but I don’t think that is on the cards for this time.  My dad is coming to do the race with me and my wife reckons that I’ll be happy with whatever time I get as long as I beat him. She’s a cheeky woman that one.

I’ve restarted the 100 pushups program (again!) and I thought I’d just let you know that you can get the whole program on 1 sheet of paper now.  It’s very handy and can be downloaded here.  I’m not going to bore you with daily updates on my pushups and will only report back in on it when I can do more than my previous best of 45 in a row.

  1. That is very cool, and very true… it is nice to not to have to worry about fitting in seats. I too remember those days which are gone forever.

As for your time for the half, I read the same thing, but did the same thing you are doing…. I still had a secret goal. My goal was to get under 2 hours, and I did it in around 1:55. You will do great whatever you do…. and your wife is right, as long as you beat your dad you will be happy :) Have fun!

  5. Sounds like it was fun! Nice 5k time too. Have a great time running the HM and the time will take care of itself. Of course, I was totally going to go into my first ever race, a 10k this weekend, with that in mind but couldn’t resist setting a time goal in the end… No matter what, I am going to have fun I’ve decided, whether that time is what I would like it to be or not.

  6. Wow…that Luge thing is cool. I wish we had something like that around here.

You’ll do great in the half no matter what time you end up getting. Although, I’m secretly pulling for you to get 1:50.

  8. I cannot wait to hear all about your experience with Auckland HM. Most importantly, have FUN !!! I have a pretty good feeling that whatever time you’ve got, it will be a sub 2 hour run.

    GOOD LUCK !!!!

  9. Under 2 hours practically makes you elite — at least among non-elites!

  10. Awesome 5k time there. Can’t wait to see your report on the HM. Your 5km time puts you around the 1hr 53m 24s time according to Jack Daniels Running formula, so even though he says not to extrapolate, you’re looking good for that sort of ball-park.

Got two HM’s myself in Feb and March…I’ve done a HM before, without any training in 2hrs 25m. I’m hoping to get under the 2hr mark in one of them, but we’ll see how that goal looks closer to the time.

Best of luck again…you’ll have done the HM by the next time I check in, so hopefully it all goes well.

  11. Great minds think alike. I had completed a test to see where to restart my 100 pushups challenge just the other day. If I get down to your side of the Earth, I need to do the luge thing as that looks ultrafun!

Tell MizFit she needs to, “Get down and start pushin’!”

As for your 5K, that was a great time. You know that you’ld crank out a sub-22 if it was a 5K race! I know that you’ll do great on the Half-Mary! Serious question? Are you planning a taper, or are you following a plan that calls for a taper? (I personally don’t like tapers, myself.)

    Happy Running!!!

  12. That luge looks like a lot of fun.

I think you’ll come close to 1:50 just be careful to i) not go out too fast at the start, and ii) watch out for the traffic jams at the beginning. Run the first 15km at a hard but comfortable pace and then teach the course a lesson in the last 6km :)

  15. I agree that the first time you do a half marathon, it’s best to not set a goal time. It’s always nice to have something in mind, but your No. 1 priority is about finishing and being happy with what happened. After that, then focus on time. My advice — don’t get caught up with the crowd at the beginning. With a half, you can start off slow, and there’s plenty of time to make it up if you feel like you’re behind.

  16. lol, damn pushups. Yeah I downloaded the 1-pager too…

Luge sounds fun - doesn’t look like there is much room at the end to stop??
