Goals for 2009

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

Running:

2009 is going to be my Marathon year.  I want to run a marathon.  I won’t make any plans for more until after my first one.  I’ve picked the Christchurch Marathon on Sunday 31 May 2009 which is not that far away.

I’m also going to do a wide variety of shorter races.  I’ll do a few half marathons, a number of 10Ks and at least 1 5K this year.  Hopefully I can break all my PRs in these.

Other fitness goals:

I still want to do the hundred.  I’m not even going to consider the Two Hundred Situps program until I’ve finished the One Hundred Pushups program.  I maxed out at 46 pushups in 2008 which is still more than I’ve ever managed to do but I would like to do the 100.   Damn you Steve Spiers.

I’m also thinking of taking up Aikido but I think that will have to wait until after the marathon.

Weightloss:

I’m in a pretty good place with my weight at the moment.  I’m still technically overweight (according to BMI) but I’m pretty happy with things.  I’d like to get to a normal BMI and so that will be my goal this year.  It’s not a big number this year and I think that is a good thing.  Truth be told I’ll be happy if I’m just lighter in 2010 than I am today.  Even one pound will do. Although…if I’m lighter I can probably run faster so maybe I’ll try for more than one pound!

To help with the weightloss I’ve entered Running Hoosier’s 13 week challenge.  I’d encourage those of you who are interested in losing weight to do the same.

  1. I’m targeting the Auckland marathon in November so I’m going to read with interest your training program!

I can fully recommend a martial art – you will get a lot out of aikido training.

  9. I can’t believe that your BMI is still overweight. You look pretty normal to me. ..

actually, you look better than “normal”, you look pretty damn good in your last photos!!

Christchurch should be a good marathon debut. I grew up there – none of those pesky hills to worry about.

    Happy 2009. :-)

  12. I like your approach, not setting too many goals and focusing on the one big thing. The marathon.

I wish I had that kind of determination, the furthest I’ve ran is 15k and I realized I just don’t have the mental focus to go beyond that.

    Best of luck Andrew.

  14. Good for you – go for the gusto! Now is an important time to be setting your goals for the coming competition year. I highly recommend two references as you mull your options over — Hal Higdon’s Marathon Training Guide is GREAT. It’s a “must read” for anyone considering a marathon. Very informative and easy-to-read. For inspiration, I recommend Dean Karnazes’ “50/50″. It’s his account about running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. Very inspiring!

  22. I looked at the ChristChurch Marathon course. Looks to be beautiful.

Years ago, I started learning some mixed martial arts. I’ve since given that up, but I can tell you from experience that there’s nothing quite like them to help get you fit.

  24. Good luck on your goals for 2009! I maxed out the pushups challenge before I stopped due to unforseen events at around the same number as you did – 46 or 47. I’m afraid I’m back almost to zero on that one now. But 2009 awaits, and its time to get back on track!
