A trifecta of volcanoes

Today is Sunday and, as is the case for most runners, that means it is Long Run day. I got up at 5AM to beat the heat and headed out. Conditions were perfect and it was great to get out the door.
Today’s route took in 3 volcanoes.
The first one I ran around was One Tree Hill. There is a beautiful track that runs around the volcano:
It was really nice running under the trees. The park was surprisingly busy for so early in the morning but I guess a lot of people had the same thing in mind as me.
I then headed out towards Mt Eden. This volcano is rather steep and it was quite tough jogging up it. I’ve run up it a few times but I haven’t done many hills over the last 7 weeks as Taipei and Christchurch are both flat. Auckland is quite hilly! Especially if you choose to run up the steepest volcano in the city. I passed a lot of people walking up and one keen fellow sprinted past me near the top.
The views from the top were pretty good:
The sun was coming up over the other side of the volcano:
After this I headed over to the 3rd volcano which is under the Auckland Domain and this is where I discovered that I’d run out of gas. My legs started to feel rather heavy and the run wasn’t as much fun anymore. Fortunately I was only about 3-4 km away from home at that point so I headed back. I think I need to get used to running a lot of hills again.
Here’s the elevation chart from my Garmin:
I finished up doing 17.75 k which was slightly shorter than my planned 20 but I think it was a good call to cut the run short. Tomorrow is another day after all.
All in all a beautiful run even though I got a bit lethargic towards the end.

Good work!
Mt. Eden is a tough climb but that makes the view from the top all the sweeter.

Beautiful!
My run today involved taking my 3 and 4 year old daughters trail riding with their bikes while I ran with them. On a trail with horses. So instead of volcanos, we had piles of horse dung. Our run involved lots of girly screams of “Horse poop! Ewwww! Yuck!” LOL. They gave Daddy a full report when we got home. They didn’t mention the horses, the puppy, the bikers, runners, the beautiful crisp sunny day, the trails soft with pine needles, or the towering trees, or anything else. Just the horse poop. Sigh.

lol, I was thinking the same thing. I didn’t realize Sunday was long run day.
Cool elevation chart, I didn’t know the Garmin’s did that.

Wow! What a beautiful place you’ve got to run. Are all of your runs in places like that?
When I was training for my half marathon, I rarely got excited about the long run days, but if there was a place like that to run, I think my level of excitement risen…

The view of Auckland is breathtaking! Incredible !!! The elevation chart blew me away. That is one heck of a hilly workout. You might want to incorporate your hilly workout at least once a week. It helps!!! Once a week, I have hilly workout in Middletown, NJ and there is a hill perched way up with a remarkable view of New York City. I shall take a picture one of these day and post it on my blog.

Man, “beat the heat” sounds so awesome from my vantage point here in snowy Toronto! I am enjoying the cross country skiing at least. Great running, and what an amazing venue for a long run too! Thanks for the pics and the satellite images of your runs – I enjoy these very much on your blog.

Andrew you are very lucky, you have a beautiful area to run in. I bet that is part of what motivates you to get up and go for your runs.
It’s funny that some of your runs are longer than my drive to work

The amount of detail in your description of the run answers most of the questions that we would have had about the procedure. The linkage of the volcanoes into a trio makes it a run with a theme, and the elevation data is quite worthwhile, because it shows an extra level of information that is important for a run.
