A good weekend

It’s been a pretty good weekend running wise.

On Saturday my wife and I headed out for a 10K run.  We were supposed to have done this one on Friday but our babysitters (grandparents) decided to go for an evening out.  One thing I’ve realised is that sometimes life gets in the way and you just have to go with it.

Our 10K run was really nice and I think we both enjoyed it very much.

This morning I headed out for my long run and unfortunately it was not so nice.  I ended up with plumbing issues around the 12K mark and had to make a rather unpleasant pitstop.  As I sit here typing this out I’ve realised that everytime I drink powerade this happens!  I think I’ll skip the powerade from now on.

Conditions were also rather variable as I had mostly overcast weather, some nice sunny patches and some extremely wet patches when the heavens opened for a tropical downpour!

I had no energy for running today after my emergency stop but I decided that I would just shuffle along rather than cut my run short.  It took me a while but I did 24K (15 miles).

That run brought my total distance for the week to 69 km (43 miles) which is not too shabby.

The whole low heart rate experiment is still ongoing but I’m really starting to feel that I’m running slower and slower which is the opposite of what this is supposed to do.  It might be the hot and humid conditions – maybe that increases the heart rate?  My resting heart rate is still in the mid 40s so I don’t think I’m losing fitness.  I’m going to give it four more weeks and then I’m going to try a few faster loops just to see how I’ve progressed.  At the moment I think it’s working but I can’t really tell as I’m not allowed to push my heart rate just yet.

To change the subject for a moment – Andrew asked me what my goal weight is.  My preliminary goal is to get to a normal BMI which is about 189 pounds at my height.  That’s about 12 pounds away at the moment.  Once I get there I’ll probably set another smaller goal but I’m not going to get ahead of myself just yet.

That’s an impressive long run. Plumbing problems aren’t much fun and good on you for finishing the planned distance.

I have to also say your resting heart rate is very impressive. I think mine is in the mid 50s.

Another good run, i wouldn’t worry too much about your speed right now. You can’t beat just clocking up large numbers even if its at a slow pace its still all building a better base.

I’m trying to imagine what kind of unpleasant plumbing issues a Powerade could cause. I think I’ll stop now. :-)

When I was training for my half marathon, I couldn’t drink Powerade either. I ended up going for the Gu gel packs and water. Took a while to get used to the texture of the stuff, but it was effective.

Personally, I prefer Gatorade over Powerade but I suspect if one gives you trouble, the other would as well. Good luck on losing the additional weight — I’d like to lose about 12 pounds this year, too.

I’ve read the articles on HR training and I worry a bit about running to slow. It seems that in order to stay in the aerobic zone that I have to slow down to a crawl. – don’t like it!

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for all the great comments you leave on my blog. You inspire me. About the E-stop. Simple sugars have a way of doing this. The thing is, especially on long runs as your blood settles into you legs, you stomach cannot handle the simples as well. Hopefully you don’t mind, but I am going to give you a link that changed my long running life. It is not gimmicky or sales oriented, but it has long lasting and research based nutrition information that is highly useful for endurance training and racing. Check it out.
