A long run that didn’t work so well

I went to a wedding yesterday (watch for a post about that!) and didn’t get home till quite late.  As such, my normal Sunday morning long run became a Sunday afternoon run.  My plan was to get in about 25 or so km and after reading about the Onehunga-Southdown cycleway on Aaron’s blog I decided that I would incorporate it into my run.

This took me through a part of town that I have never really run through before.  It was rather industrial and empty of other folks.

I think this is a photo of the Southend Power Station.

And this is the view from the Cycleway.

I was going pretty good up until I hit the cycleway even though I got lost at one point! Unfortunately when I hit the cycleway my lunch started coming up to say hello. I think a big greasy fried rice mix about 30 mins before starting a run was a mistake. Actually I’m very sure it was a mistake.

I started having a few walk breaks but things weren’t really getting better. I hit the end of the cycleway and then didn’t really know where to go. There was a road but there was no footpath and it looked very busy. There was a little track heading off into the bushes so I figured that would be the way to go. A bit of a mistake! I walked for about 400 metres down the road and passed a junk yard with a wide open gate. About 425 metres down the road I saw the junk yard dog having a snooze. That’s when I thought it might be a good idea to pick up the pace a bit! About 450 meters down the road I heard him start to bark very nastily and come running. I sprinted hard out for about 200 meters and found an exit that went into suburbia. Luckily the dog didn’t head towards the open gate.

I really felt crap at that point and so I decided to call the run to a halt and I gave my lovely wife a call to come and get me. She was there pretty quickly God bless her!

Overall about 14.5km in 1:37. A bit disappointing but I think discretion was the better part of valour on the day.

No good with the lunch coming back but I liked the run report. Glad I’m not the only one that gets lost on new runs :)

Outrunning dogs is a good way to interval train!

Sorry to hear about the stomach and dog troubles but I did laugh at the ending. I don’t think I would hear the end of it if I needed to phone home for a ride!

Yup, food before running is a bad mixture for me too.

I’ve about given up on fried rice altogether. I love the taste of the stuff, but I had an experience similar to yours that totally broke me of that habit. I didn’t quite give up early enough…

Nope, sounds like the fried rice was a lesson learned. :) Hope you’re feeling better now.

It doesn’t take much for those dogs to catch up, no matter how far ahead you are.
    What a good wife!

I’ve been lurking around, reading your posts for a couple months, and I must say, you are one of my hero’s! That’s a pretty long run after a night out I must say… even though you’ve been at it for a while, it’s still amazing. Where do you get those pathway maps that you post? I love them! Anyway, keep up the hard work Andrew!!!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained! You survived this ordeal, and lived to blog about it. Thanks for the picks and the story!

I think you’re right about the rice. The most I’ll eat 30 minutes before a run is a banana or half a bagel. Even then, I prefer to eat an hour before and for any run shorter than about 16km, I’d just as soon not eat anything (I run early morning, just after waking up).

The dog must’ve given you quite the fright! I always get a little nervous when I pass one!

What an adventure you had there and also what perseverance to continue on after all that you had to deal with. I try not to eat much before I exercise, especially fried food :-) I guess I learned something here as well. What not to eat and do when I start a run. Still a great post and an awesome view of were you run. I an envious.

    Amazing run, Andrew.

Eating less than 1 or 2 hours before a run or a game of tennis makes my stomach protest too.
