Run Auckland 2009 Race #1

About a year ago I ran my first ever race. The Run Auckland 2008 Race #1 at Remuera and yesterday I did the 2009 version of the same event. The key difference was that this year I ran the 10K race rather than the 5K event.

Conditions were beautiful!  A bit too much so actually as it got rather warm.  I actually prefer the overcast days to clear sunny ones for running myself.  There was literally not a cloud in the sky.

There were just over 600 people in the 10K event and about 250 or so in the 5K event so there was a good crowd out for a Sunday morning jaunt. The course had a few rolling hills (undulating is the word I think) and was two laps of the 5K course.

I was not expecting to break any PRs as I know that this course is long by about 800 metres.

In all my previous races I’ve made the mistake of starting out way too fast so this time I deliberately went slower than I know I can go.  I decided that I would try to stick to my HM pace for the first lap and then speed up for the second lap.  Well the first part of my plan worked but the second part where I go faster in the second half didn’t.  For some reason I just couldn’t really find the mental determination to speed up much – in fact I slowed down!  My splits were 28:37 and 30:24.  Which means my final time was 59:01 for 10.8K.   So definitely no PR – in fact that is my slowest race in a long time.  I still enjoyed it though so I’m not too bothered. :)

We’ve got these nifty results graphics now so you can see whereabouts in the pack you finished. So I’m definitely not the fastest but not the slowest by a long shot!

  1. Good stuff sounds like you had an enjoyable race. The weather was certainly good.

Did you start nearer the front? Running late I ended up too far back – done this in my last two races.

    See you at #2!

  4. Congrats on your year of racing! I did the same thing a few weeks ago where I ran the same race I started with a year ago. I was just happy that I beat my last years time. Congrats to you doing the longer race!

I like the “running man” graphics, too.
My first race that will be a repeat is not until August, but there is not too many races in my part of the world in the summer … to darn hot!

  7. Congratulations on running your anniversary race. It’s always neat to have a race that you run year after year. The race itself becomes a milestone. Very cool.

  10. Running is such a weird thing with your body sometimes doing what you want it to and other times doing the drastic opposite. The important thing though is having fun doing it! Running the same event each year is a blast and can help you remember why you run. Happy runniversary!
