A run towards breakfast
I was up bright and early this morning – 4:30AM to be precise. My cousin had invited us to head over to her place for breakfast at 9AM and I decided that I would run over and work up an appetite. Truth be told I don’t need a run to work up an appetite but I figured it would help burn off the Easter eggs.
My cousin lives on the other side of Auckland in Titirangi so I would be running to a place I’d never run before.
I left the house just after 5:30ish while it was still dark and headed out towards the waterfront. I took a bit of a blurry photo of a big passenger liner that was docked outside the Hilton hotel:

I had to do an emergency bathroom stop in the Viaduct area. Fortunately there was a public restroom available so public indecency charges were avoided.
The sun was starting to come up as I headed through the marina. I ran under the harbour bridge that is in the background:

I headed back towards the North Western motorway via Ponsonby as I knew there was a bike track that travelled alongside the motorway that I was keen to run along. After a few false starts I found the entrance to it and headed down it.
The run was pretty uneventful up until the last ten km or so as the gradient started to trend upwards. I must admit it was a real struggle and my pace slowed right down. I finally reached the high point and thought that I would be able to blast down the last two km as the road was heading down pretty steeply but it was actually almost worse than climbing up as the impact on my tired legs was rather jarring.
Anyway, I finally arrived (a little late) and sat down to a fabulous breakfast of croissants and hot cross buns. The easter eggs after were just the icing on the cake!
This was my longest run ever at 31.14 km (almost 20 miles) at an average pace of 6:45 min per km. Those hills really killed my average pace today but I was going for distance not time. Overall a good cross Auckland run. I was very glad that my wife had driven the car there and I didn’t have to run back as well!

Andrew that is a very impressive distance indeed – well done! My parents live in Titirangi and I know those hills well (but from driving!).
Is this going to be your longest distance until your marathon? I have read that 32km is about what most training programs have as the longest run.
Did you run with a camelbak?

Yeah I don’t plan on going much further.
I’ll try to do another one or two of this distance over the next few weeks.
I had my camelbak but it started to leak as I left so I ditched it. I ran out of water about 20K in so that was a problem.

Mate that is awesome. I remember you telling me you started off running between light poles … and that was tough.
When does the book come out? In this day and age of obesity warnings etc you are a shining light. (for fitness, not obesity!!) LOL

Great run. Superb effort getting up so early, and getting up those last hills. I agree – going down steep hills kills my knees and quads too.

Great distance run. You should be happy about the pace as well. Looking at your graph, I’d say the hill at the end must have been a killer.

Wow – that clmb up and over the hill to Titirangi must have been a killer that far into your run! Camelbaks can be a problem. Mine started leaking on me halfway through the Grape Ride cycle race last year and I had to do the same as you. I’m going to buy a fuel belt when I get back to Wellington.
Did you use any gels on your run? I’ve found a few which don’t mess my stomach up and the ones with caffeine in them are like rocket fuel! On a 32km run I’d take one every 45 to 60 minutes.

I had 3…but they were in my camelbak’s pocket so I left them behind by mistake! The caffeine ones too!

Ouch … I can’t even imagine running 32km without any fuel and not completely dying! I take it popping into a dairy enroute wasn’t an option either?! I guess if you know you can do 32km like that then you can probably manage a well-fuelled marathon!

Congrats! That’s a great long run. Hills are killer, but you sure feel accomplished afterward, don’t you? I think you deserve a relaxing rest of the day.

Hi Andrew, I love the morning shots. I get so jealous coming to your blog as I am not allowed to run any more.
BUT I am really into swimming now and learning lots of new stuff.
Take care,
Andrew

Now see, this is why I wouldn’t be a very effective runner. I’d have stopped at the marina and watched it wake up for the day.
Great run–hot cross buns well-earned!

Congratulations on a tremendous long run – 31+k! And I know what you mean about the easter eggs – I ate way too many this weekend and justified it by telling myself that I was saving my boys from all that sugar.

Great idea to do a one way run. Very brave of you to tackle those hills (mountains?) late in the run.
Nice job!
