Run Auckland Race 2 2009
I had race 02 of the Run Auckland series yesterday morning and it was a smasher!
First off, it was my beloved wife’s first race and she had a great race. She did the 5K and listening to her great race report afterwards gave me a great big smile as the enthusiasm was pouring off her in waves. Here she is just before the start:
I met fellow blogger Aaron for the first time:
Unfortunately he had a crap race as he injured himself. I passed him hobbling along at the 3.5km mark. I’ve always dreamed of being fast enough to catch him but not this way.
The race itself was pretty good. It was two laps of the 5k circuit and my only real grizzle is that the course was long again. I find running races really hard (funnily enough more mentally than physically) and it really irks me when I have to run longer than the supposed distance. A hundred metres or so is fine. A full kilometer is not.
I ran a 10K personal record at 52.44 but unfortunately the race itself was 10.98 km according to my post race GPS download. I’m going to take the PR – naysayers be damned.
These results show an improvement from my last race:
I finished 198th (223rd last time) overall, 136th male finisher (144th) an 44th (52nd) in my age division. Small improvements but I’ll take them! One funny thing from the stats is that apparently I passed 2 runners but 32 passed me in the second half! I haven’t quite got the hang of this whole negative split thing yet!
It’s quite interesting to see how the races affect me physically now. Last year I did the 5K option and for the rest of the day I was buggered. This year I felt great after the race. My fitness is definitely much improved.

I’d take the PR too. Congratulations! Also, big kudos to your wife for her first race. Sounds like a great day.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Aaron. Injuries are the worst.
Keep doing great things down there!

Well done, another good effort. Looks like you would have registered a sub 50 minute race but for the distance.

Well done, I’d take the PR too, how annoying that they can’t measure the course – not really good enough is it!

Hi there. I came across your blog a few days ago and I’ve been reading through your archives over the past couple. It’s really quite incredible how far you’ve come so quickly, and how you’ve managed to stay so motivated. Going from nothing to 20k+ runs in under a year is so impressive to my untrained eye. It’s inspirational. I’ve only just begun, but I did do 10ks yesterday for the first time in my life, albeit on the treadmill. One week at a time.
One question: I’ve seen you mention garmins several time, and I just had a quick glance at their site. Any advice?
Great again. Congrats and keep going.

I love my Garmin 305 but that’s all I’ve ever had. I’ve heard good things about the 405 and not so good things about the earlier models.

I give you credit for a PR, too. Way to go.
I always look for “certified distance” races. There are standards, but I’m not sure if they’re world wide or just US. There are also reasons that a distance may be long or short — you take a slightly different track than the measured track, you may unknowingly cut a corner not intended, etc. With that said, you’d be talking about 1-200 meters max, but certainly not a kilometer.

Congratulations on the PB! good comparing the progress from last year.
With Run Auckland I think they are a bit constrained in terms of finishing distances given they are running on park tracks and so forth – and its essentially a fun run event.
I think my injury is a pulled calf muscle. Can walk on it so its not as bad as initially thought. I’m going to rest it for a week and see how it feels then

Congrats to you and your wife on tackling the race!!
Great race! I hate it when a race isn’t measured correctly. That’s quite a bit extra there.

Great stuff! And congrats to your wife on her race. Also, a PR in a 10K when running 11K is amazing! That means you must have run somewhere in the 47 minute range for the actual 10k, which is right up there with me and I can identify with how hard that is. When I did it I was hurting for a while, so I think you are ahead of me in fitness.
Congratulations!

Great going–and a great photo of the Mrs! Congrats to you both. Just being out there feels marvelous, but it’s very rewarding to improve upon previous times and places, too. My first 10 miler is this weekend–hope I get the same kind of weather you two apparently got!
Congrats to you both!!
