The Joy of Running

I’ve been without a run for a week now and it’s driving me a bit batty so I’m going to restart my running today.  I reckon a week off is enough time for recovery after a marathon.

A lot of folks have sort of jokingly asked me when the next marathon is going to be.  I think folks assume that I’ll say one is enough and leave it there!  Actually, I’ve already signed up for the Auckland marathon in 5 months time. :)

One of my blog buddies has just started C25K and is discovering the joy that running brings to one’s life.  Head on over and give him a bit of encouragement.  I love reading people’s C25K journeys as that is where I started not too long ago.  I still remember the joy of being able to complete each week and the sheer elation of reaching the 5K mark.

It’s funny but you forget how hard it was to start this whole fitness journey sometimes.  I’ve gotten a bit blase about it but when I stop and reflect on how far I’ve come it is nothing short of astounding.  I was on the pathway to an early death via the couch of doom but now I’m running marathons.

If anyone out there is reading this who thinks that they can’t run then I (and all the other C25Kers) am living proof that they are wrong.  You can do it and you will feel fantastic doing it!  Of course you may want to die at times but hey, such is life. :)

I’m impressed. The half was more than enough for me, but kudos to you for tackling another.

Andrew, Thank you for the mention, You are one of the inspirations for me starting the C25K program and just about 17 months ago I was on that “couch of doom” @534 pounds and partially because of your blog I started the program.

I am starting week 2 tomorrow and am hoping to go through it just like I did week one.

    Here’s to the coming weeks.

You touch on an even more important point than the “I can’t run” sentiment, and that is the “I don’t want to run” sentiment. I was sure I’d hate running, but fell in love with it!

I can so relate to everything in your post! You should be fine to run. I only waited a week and I was fine. Go with your instinct and your body will tell you if it’s too soon. I’m envious of you running Auckland – maybe next year! I’m running the Mountain to Surf in Taranaki in March instead. I have a few other events to get out of the way before I can focus on marathon training again …

Nice post Andrew – I too can second that all the way. It is possible if I can do it as well – though the early days are tough they are oh so worth it!

Looking forward to your next marathon :)

I knew you’d sign up for another one. You were addicted long ago. :) One of the best feelings in the world is the post-marathon high. Signing up for another helps keep the spirits up.

True enough – it is good to take stock sometimes for it is easy to forget those milestones that once seemed so difficult to reach, but now are passed without notice on a regular basis.

Hope the path to the next one goes great. Sounds like you’ve caught that marathon bug. I’m still waiting for that second one and can’t believe it’s been almost two years since I ran mine!
