Sunday afternoon long run

I got up bright and early to get a run in before everyone else woke up  but I have to admit that I piked out.  I was standing outside on the porch looking out at the wind/rainstorm and I turned around and went back inside and had another coffee instead.

My family and I decided that we weren’t going to let the weather trap us indoors so we bundled up warmly and headed off to the zoo. It was really fun watching my 2 year old’s reaction to all the animals. Much to my disgust she was much more fascinated by the chickens than the lions!

By early afternoon the weather had lightened up considerably so I headed out for an easy 9 miler.  I got rained on a bit but the wind was blowing so strongly that it passed really quickly.  There were quite a few people out on Tamaki Drive and it was a really good run.

Here’s my routemap:

I did just about 15 km in 1:32:10.  And that ends week 03 of my marathon training.

My wife is doing her half marathon training so she did a great 8.5 km along the same route a bit later in the afternoon while I took our daughter to the park.  A good time was had by all. :)

Good stuff. Bit of the luck of the draw going running at the moment in terms of weather. Looks like you picked a good time. I did my run today around the same time :)

How are you finding the plan?

Not too bad. The runs are easy it is just sometimes difficult to find the time to run.

You always show pics of the most gorgeous running routes.

We’ve been lucky the last few days here. The temps have dropped off into the mid-70’s. A great little break from the heat of July.

That’s a decent pace for the 15km. How you feeling after the cold \ flu – back to normal or still not quite 100%?

Still coughing a bit. It seems to be taking a while to clear the lungs but generally speaking I’m fine.

Nice time at the Zoo, it sounds like. We took the boys to the Toronto Zoo yesterday and all the animals were super active, which was very cool. The gorillas in particular were awesome – chasing eachother, play fighting, and putting different blankets as clothing and stuff. Hilarious!

Nice running also. It is still strange to read about your weather when we are in the middle of summer up here. Way to not let the rain get you out of your training plans!

Gorillas! Our zoo is pretty small so we don’t have any of them. I remember my kid brother getting quite upset once when the news reported that ‘guerrillas’ were getting shot!

I imagine it truly was delightful to watch your daughter’s reactions to the zoo! What a lovely way to spend part of a Sunday!

Maybe of interest to you (going back to a recent question): my resting HR this morning was 42bpm. Perhaps I’m getting in better shape? It would be cool to get into the 30s like you!

What a gorgeous view! I bet that view helps distract you on those long runs! My son used to be more interested in the construction equipment rather than the animals at that age. I struggled through my 9 miler on Saturday. It sounds like we have opposite weather situations right now!

My kids used to like the snacks, park, And bences at the zoo. But they grow so fast and interests change it is still a delight to take them!

Great job on your run! We have a marathon and half marathon group in the Lounge if you are looking for any additional virtual support.

Man — you are going to have to stop taking pictures. It is simply so gorgeous. Simply breathtaking. I had enough of drooling over my keyboard lately.

On my wish list… to run in New Zealand in my lifetime.
