Step back and step up

It’s been a great week of running for one reason or another.

I did 6K on Tuesday evening, 8K on Wednesday, 5K with my wife on Friday morning, 5K Saturday morning and a nice 15K run with my wife this morning (Sunday).

It’s been a step back week for me.  The idea with the step back weeks is that you decrease your running mileage a bit so that your body can recover from the marathon training.  So far I’m enjoying this marathon training program.  I’ve just completed week 06 and from week 07 onwards the mileage starts to step up a bit.  The 3 miles runs on Tuesday and Friday become 4 mile runs and the midweek run extends to 7 miles.  The long run just keeps getting longer by about a mile or two every week.

The weather here in Auckland has been fantastic for running this week.  This is the view from my run on Friday morning:

Not bad eh!

The weather this morning was a bit worse but still pretty good.  The only problem was that there was a reasonably strong breeze blowing so it made running one way a bit unpleasant but it was great when we hit the turnaround spot as the wind pushed us along.  I’m saying us because my wife ran with me again this morning.  It was a step back week for me but it was a step up week for her as she ran her longest run ever at 15K!  I’m extremely proud of her.  Her half marathon training is going well.

It was a nice out and back run today.  15K in 1:34:32.  Pretty effortless really.  I felt good the whole time.

One funny thing we saw on the run today was this:

I suspect someone had a bit too much to drink and stole a car for a bit of a hoon on the beach.  There are plonkers everywhere I guess!

How could your wife fail to do well when she has such a good example to follow living right with her!

That’s a pretty funny photo! I can’t help but wonder how far in the water comes during high tide!!

One of the coolest thing about running is that we do see strange things from time to time. What a sight to see that car tanning on the beach.

Some step back week there! Very impressive. My wife wants us to move to Auckland and was asking me if it snows there? By the looks of things, I guess not… Nice running!

I’ve never seen snow in Auckland and I’ve lived here about 15 years now. :)

I admit — I’ve gotten stuck on the beach like that before, and I wasn’t even drunk… :(

Nice long run Andrew! Weird seeing a car on the eastern beachs though.

Regarding the snow in Auckland – its only happened once in recorded history – 27 July 1939. Apparently a couple of cm’s on Mt Eden. Interesting bit of trivia eh?

That is pretty funny with the car on the beach. Who knows how that could have happened! At least the mystery kept your mind a little busy for the run :)

I think I am going to start bringing my phone out on runs with me so I can take pictures as well. There have been many times where I wanted to kick myself for not having it!!

    Hi Andrew
I stumbled across your blog. You are a true inspiration. So much so, that I have now started my own blog/site/whatever: http://www.runnersdiary.co.nz
You’ve taught me to try and look out for the beauty in every-day things when I’m out running – and with some super long runs coming up, I’ll be doing my best to do just that.
All the best for your training. I’ll keep checking in!

With all this running you do, how are your joints?

  12. AndrewNo Gravatar on August 14th, 2009 7:04 am

My joints are great. I used to have a really weak ankle but the running has strengthened it.

Good link there. I know people that swear by glucosamine (sp?) to help with joint problems and have recommended that I take it (as a preventative measure) even though I’ve no issues (touch wood). AFAIK, it’s essentially the stuff cartilage is made off.
