On being a superhero

I went for a run earlier today and during said run I was listening to Phedippidations #200. Steve Runner said something that really resonated. He said that to many people, people who can run even a mile are like superheroes. I remember when I was about 100 pounds heavier (not so long ago) and being unable to even dream of running a mile. I’d see folks running and think wow. And so whenever you have a run where things don’t go so well remember that you are a superhero to some folks. And yes, I do sometimes wear running tights. :)

Today’s run was a relatively slow 12 kms. Having said that I was quite proud of it as I ran to the top of One Tree Hill which is a short but relatively steep climb. I definitely felt like a superhero when I got to the top!

I got some funny looks on my way up:

Cornwall Park (where I was running) is a working farm and there were hundreds of sheep with lambs dotted around the place. The view from the top was pretty good but I didn’t hang around for very long. The photos I took weren’t very special so I’m not going to bother putting any up.

I did 7 km yesterday and 12 km today so this week has started off quite well in terms of running. I hope the rest of the week goes as well!

  1. Good stuff. Just make sure you wear the undies over the tights like superman does :)

Cornwall park is one of my favourite places to run as well. There are roosters too – sometimes they cheer, or rather crow, when you run past. Have you noticed the signs warning of the cows. I think a couple of years ago a jogger was attacked by a cow who had recently given birth and went into protection mode.

  3. Good to see you including a hill run in this weeks runs. I was just wondering the other day how many hills you run as many of your runs seem to be along the waterfront ( and why wouldn’t you i guess).

Yeah, my runs have been a bit ‘flat’ lately! Fortunately you don’t have to look far for hills in Auckland.

  5. Lovely scenery! I actually saw a photo of One Tree Hill on a calendar recently and I felt so smug knowing what and where it was. :)

  9. Have just discovered your site and, being a beginning runner, was touched to learn you used to be 100 lbs. heavier and thought when watching runners, as I do now, ‘wow’. For some reason, that gave me the impetus to dig deeper and really believe I can do this.

Just thought I’d share that. Have bookmarked you and will check back often.

  10. I used to be able to run – hey, I was actually in the “Alice Springs Running And Walking Club” (yes, that’s Alice Springs in Central Australia!). But what happened after about 4 months? I got really bad “Shin Splints” and was out of the game for good. Up until this day, whenever I run for more than 5 minutes, the shin splints comes back, and I have to stop. Even just brisk walking over time will make me feel it. But you know what? I think if you keep at it, in the best way you can, if you don’t give up, then you are a superhero, too!
For me it’s to keep going to the gym, and to keep getting on the treadmill for as long as I can without risking any more of my health.
