A pre-work run

I decided to get out for a run before work this morning and I’m so glad I did.  My wife and I both work at the University of Auckland and after dropping her off I headed out for my run.

Stairs up to Mt Eden

I decided to head out towards Mt Eden and run up to the summit.  The views are normally quite good and I always feel rather virtuous after running up one of Auckland’s many volcanoes.

I headed out through the Auckland Domain and then up towards Mt Eden.  There is a road that circles up the volcanic cone but I don’t normally like running on the road as there are a few tourist busses that go up quite regularly and the road is not particularly wide.  So I normally head up the stairs at the bottom of Glenfell Rd and then take the walking track to the summit.

Going up these stairs is a workout by itself I reckon!

However, once you’re up the view makes it all worthwhile:

I then ran back to work through Newmarket and Parnell.  It was a beautiful morning run and I was particularly glad to be able to do it, especially after having a think about this post from Tyler. Do you remember what it was like to be obese?  To be honest I don’t think about it that much anymore but I do every so often remember that I never used to do physical activities because I couldn’t.  And I’m never going back to that!

In other news I’m actually supposed to be on annual leave at the moment but work is still a bit busy so I’m in finishing a few things off.  Hopefully I’ll only have to come in for a few more days this year. :)

  1. What lovely views! Perfect reward for the effort of getting there.

I’m starting to forget what the day-to-day of obesity felt like. Like you, I mostly remember not being able to do things that looked like fun. It seems like another life, not just two years ago.

    Enjoy your leave!

  4. I too don’t really think about the old me too much, but occassionally when doing things (eg like spending all afternoon up a ladder painting) do think that “the old me” would never have been able to do that!

Question for you: When you were overweight, did you think you were? I was in denial (didn’t think there was a problem) for many. many years.

Hmm…I don’t think so. I usually go in via Glenfell or Clive. I’ll have to give it a go.

  7. I am waiting for your camera to break. This way, I won’t have to look at so many breathtaking pictures. This one was simply toooooo breathtaking. I have to think that Auckland is such a beautiful city.

  8. You have such beautiful places to exercise. The view is breathtaking.

I’m getting back on track with my healthy living plan, because it is amazing how quickly I was falling back into my old ways. Not wanting to do anything physical, fitting uncomfortably in places like cars, and taking more naps were all the motivation I needed.

Getting outdoors and exercising feels so great (especially this time of year in Florida), and your blog always reminds how great it is. I will do this with ease again soon.

  11. I would probably feel pretty virtuous too if I ran up a volcano. I need to get my butt up and start doing some exercising. I like to walk, and now that winter is over in my part of the world, some walking and good vitamin D from the sunshine will do me some good.
