The state of things: 2009

Well 2009 is at an end and it is time for a bit of a reflect.

Things that went well:

I should rename my site Andrew is Fit as my fitness level is higher than it has ever been. I guess a more accurate title might be Andrew is getting fitter!

I ran two marathons this year! I have to admit those experiences were pretty good. I especially enjoyed the first one. I felt super afterwards even though it was pretty tough during the race itself. I also ran two half marathons and various shorter distance races. The one I enjoyed the most was running with my wife for her first half marathon.

It has been wonderful running with my wife to be honest. It’s quality time together of the sort that neither of us thought we’d ever share.

Things that didn’t go that well:

I’m a bit peeved at myself as I’ve gained rather than lost weight this year. At one point I was within 8 pounds of my goal weight but now I’m back to about 29 pounds to go. Having said that it’s not too bad as I know what works for me and I’m going to make an effort to focus on healthy eating this year.

I find that when I get stressed I still resort to eating. It’s been quite a stressful year for me for one reason or another. When you combine that with the hunger increase caused by marathon training then the scale tends to move in the way that you don’t want!

Overall I think the year has been a good mix of things that worked well and things that didn’t quite work. It’s all about finding a healthy balance so I’m going to have a think about how to improve my life in 2010.

In other news I went for a 10K run this morning and it was great!

You’ve had an awesome year, Andrew! It’s been so much fun reading your accounts of your new, “fitter” life! There’s no telling what you’ll accomplish in 2010. I plan to be here for the show!

Great year, especially with two marathons. I’ve struggled with my weight too, but it’ll work itself out in 2010.

I am blown away that you have gained 20 pounds and are able to run a 10k today. You are real proof that the perseverence is more important than the weight loss.

Why do you think, besides the stress snacking, that you have gained that weight back

I have wanted to run a 10k for years and just hearing that you ran a couple and a couple of marathons is cool to hear.

I love following your post and will be back next year.

Glad that you’re not stressed about the weight gain. I’d happily trade some extra weight to have my wife out running with me! Thanks again for the blog mate, I enjoy reading every post.

I toyed around with changing my blogs name, too, for the same reason.

But I concluded that “getting fit” is a way of life, not a destination. I suspect it will be the work of a lifetime.

    Good post.

Andrew, you’ve definitely had a great year. Keep up the running work. My mantra is fitness is a way better goal than a number on a scale. For what it’s worth, my wife who does some serious mileage with her running buddies always says that the weight starts to come off once you consistently run more than 40 miles per week. That’s a tough number, but if you can get there, then you probably don’t have to worry too much about what you eat! Something to think about.

Sorry about the weight gain but you’ve said you’re not giving up — go for it! When I first started back running 6.5 years ago, my wife also started running with me. We managed to do that for a bit over a year. Then she had back problems and I had knee surgery. I came back much more quickly than she did and we just didn’t/couldn’t run together. However, we have run 2 10K’s together — I ran an early wave and then went back and ran with her. Our adult daughter ran with us on the 2nd one. Great fun and great memories.

Hmm…40 miles a week should be doable with a bit of planning. I think I’ll see if I can ramp up to that.

A great year in many ways, Andrew. Fair to say that you ARE fit!

Too bad we’ve both found some of the pounds we’d lost. I predict 2010 will be a down year for us both!
