My goals for 2010: Running

I’ve been giving my goals for 2010 some thought and I thought I’d start off by setting some goals for my running.

First off I want to keep running but I think that goes without saying really.  In 2009 my blog turned into a bit of a running blog as it has become an integral and important part of my life.

I’ve decided that I’m only going to do 1 marathon this year and I have selected the Taipei Marathon.  My wife is originally from Taipei so we were planning on being there late this year anyway to visit family. This is on the 19th of December so I’ve got plenty of time to train.  I’ve been listening to Steve Runner of the Phedippidations podcast and he’s been doing a series of podcasts on breaking 4 hours in a marathon. I’m going to aim for that as well.

I’m also thinking of doing the half marathon at the SBS marathon in June.  My parents live in Christchurch so I think I can tell my wife we’re going to visit the grandparents and I sneak out for a little run. ;)

I’ve entered the Run Auckland series again and this time I’ve selected a mix of 5K and 10K distances rather than just focusing on the 10K events.  I’ll probably do the half marathon at the end of this series as it is one I wanted to do this year but I got sick so couldn’t.

I also want to try and build up my base mileage somewhat.  It will require a bit of effort and planning on my part but it should be doable.  In 2009 I average about 34 km a week and I’d like to up that to about 40 km on average.  This means I’ll have to have a working average of about 50 odd km for most weeks as there are always those times where you can’t run for one reason or another.

On that note I started off 2010 the right way with a 10.3km run this morning.  Conditions were perfect for running, overcast with a light breeze, about 60% humidity so not too hot and muggy. The sun was just starting to break through:

Well, I hope to get PRs in all my race categories this year!  But we’ll see what happens eh!

An overseas marathon sounds pretty cool. One of my ex work colleagues did Brisbane and Sydney last year and it sounded neat racing in unusual places.

I’m going to check out Phedippidations as well. Sounds like there is some useful stuff there about getting faster.

A sub-4 hour marathon is a life goal for me too – I’ll race you! I think if you plan to do it this year, you’ll win, I’m thinking I have a bit more rehab to do.

Looks like good goals. I’m going to try a 1/2 marathon this year also and increase (ever so slowly as our marathon season is November and December only) my base mileage.

Looks like a good list of goals. I’m partial to the idea of only doing one to two long runs myself, as I know so many people who get obsessed with the idea of completing as many marathons as possible.

Didn’t you do one at Christchurch last year as well?

This reminds me of this quote: “Fortunately analysis is not the only way to resolve inner conflicts. Life itself still remains a very effective therapist.” Karen Horney

I came across your website oh so many years ago…your first son was just a baby at the time. I occasionally checked back in to read your blog, but haven’t for the past few years. Just tonight I remembered I used to like reading your blog, and discovered that ever so much has been going on in your life! You look fantastic! I am so happy for you that you have escaped the prison of obesity. You are an inspiration!
