Base training in the sun

Well my holiday is now over so I’ve been back at work since yesterday.  I’ve had surprisingly productive days so I’m quite pleased.

I went for a great run along the waterfront before work this morning and really enjoyed myself.  I bumped into a friend I haven’t seen in about 7 years and he didn’t recognise me at first.  It was really funny watching the recognition slowly seeping into his eyes.

It’s a glorious summer’s day here in Auckland.  I’ve been reading a lot of posts from American bloggers and most of them are talking about how bitterly cold it is.  Well freezing folks, this photo is for you:

These are the conditions I have to go run in at the moment.  Pity me folks for life is tough! :)

I’m going along quite nicely in terms of building up a good running base.  My next marathon isn’t until late December so I am doing the low heart rate training routine again in the hopes of building up a really solid aerobic base.

As such, most of my runs have defaulted to slightly longer and slower than normal.  At the moment my default distance is about 10K (6 miles for the metrically challenged) and it’s been really nice to be able to just go out and run and enjoy life.

My running map for today:

My Activities Run to Work 6-01-2010

My wife has bought us tickets to visit Christchurch at the beginning of June to visit my parents.  SBS half marathon here I come!

When you’re cold, I’ll remind you of how nice it is here. :) It’s quite frigid these days in much of the U.S.

That’s wonderful. I’m not a running person but I admire those who are.

Well today felt like a heat wave — up to the low 30′s with no wind after a couple days with wind chills around zero.

I made a note to return the favor in July.

    Enjoy your summer!

Man, I envy your weather right now! Those pictures look amazing as far as places to run go – water, boats, great skyline. My wife brings up the notion of moving to New Zealand someday, and your photographs are definitely a good sell. Who knows…

    All the best!

I too am jealous of that fabulous weather! This morning I walked in 9 degree weather. I think I had on about 30 layers and was still chilly!

Glad to hear things are going well for you!

Ahhhhh but you don’t mention the wind! Or is Auckland missing out on that? I’m so sick of thinking I’m having a great run and then turning the corner to come home and being hit full force by the darn wind.

    Don’t work too hard :)

Can you sense the jealousy? It’s snowing outside as I write this. Going for a run in about an hour.

It’s down to -6C here and it really sucks. Spent the evening cleanign the garage so I wouldn’t have to scrape ice in the morning. Today I had to jack with the pool as it needed heating elements around the pipes so they wouldn’t freeze. It’s supposed to get down to -12 C tonight. Brrr! I’m staying indoors for sure!
