This is what I eat
I was asked by a few people to do another “what do you eat” post so I thought I would do a short photo essay of my daily food.
This is what I normally eat Monday to Friday and weekends I reserve for a bit of variety. Some might find it a bit boring but it works for me as I enjoy every single meal. Lots of photos so I’ve put them beyond the jump.1st off breakfast:
I have some oats (in water as I hate milk) with a handful of strawberries and a handful of blueberries.
My post run protein:
One scoop of protein power in a cup of water.
And I normally have one piece of fruit as well. The other one is my mid-afternoon snack.
My midmorning snack is normally 2 boiled eggs. I love eggs and having them boiled is the easiest for me to do as I can prepare them in advance.
Lunch:
I normally make my lunches for the week in bulk. I have a bed of brown rice and quinoa and on top I have a mixture of soy mince, black beans, green beans, green & red peppers, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, spring onions and tomatoes. Nothing unhealthy in there. And it tastes pretty good too.
Dinner is a salad on top of a bed of chickpeas and nuts.
It’s a pretty healthy set of dishes I think. Best of all I’m not hungry and I have plenty of energy for my running.
It’s definitely a lot healthier than the way I was eating before I wised up.
In other news I did a great 12.6 km run into work today and I also managed to complete week 04 of the hundred pushups program for the first time.

Good looking food! You’re more creative than me. For example, my daily ziplock o’ spinach. Haha I do the apple, pear, protein water thing tho

What’s your calorie total and macronutrient breakdown? It seems to be pretty light on the protein. Although it might be deceiving as there is no meat but there are other sources such as quinoa and chick peas. Are you a vegetarian? Otherwise it’s looking good. I couldn’t do it without the meat but that’s just me.

I’m a vegetarian. And I did say that my lunch has a base of quinoa and my salad has a base of chickpeas and nuts. I also eat soy and heaps of beans all vegetarian based protein stuff.

I use orange juice on my oats, cos I hate milk too. Soak in boiling water (or cold water overnight), then cook up with OJ until it’s the right consistency.

Ewwww oats with water, give me milk any day LOL … that looks a lot healthier than what I’m eating, perhaps that is why you’re losing weight and I’m not, much anyway

Now that’s healthy!
I really like eggs as well, but it seems like when I eat hard boiled eggs, I end up with a monstrous craving for carbs. It doesn’t hit me if I have a veggie omlet, but I always end up binging on some kind of carb if I have those.
Go figure.

Well done Andrew! That’s the sort of diet everyone should be on, then we wouldn’t need to go to the doctors. Keep up the good work. I started with my own program about the same time as you and am 2kg’s lighter. I’d say my diet looks very similar, but a bit less – I don’t have such a big energy output as you.

With the amount of running you are doing, and this particular diet you’re following do you still feel hungry and need to eat more? It looks a little on the light side, but that’s coming from a big eater like myself. Interesting to see 2 eggs/day for mid morning. Is it okay to eat this number of eggs regularly?

It may look light but those portions are actually rather large. I was worried that I would have no energy especially now that I’m running heaps but I’ve felt great so I think I must be getting enough food for sure.
And from what I’ve read two eggs a day is fine. I know my cholesterol etc. numbers are great.

How did you become a vegetarian. It’s possible but I’m doubting that you were when you were bigger. Was it a gradual change or a sudden, drastic change?

Andrew,
Although it takes a change of habit to start eating healthy stuff, I find that beans are good way to get a protein injection and sort of satisfy my natural craving for meat. Sometimes, I just eat a bowl of steamed green beans….and happy with it.
Thanks

Nice to know about your diet style. I think the great contribution to all health and fitness program is your own personal discipline. Good disposition and attitude makes you where you are now. Congratulations to you and your healthy lifestyle. May you continue to be a model worthy of emulation since a lot of people today are getting more obese. Trust me, as a public health educator, sometimes I feel that my work has become futile. More and more Americans have become overweight and obese.
