Weigh in post #7 2010: Hear the Tiger roar!

Another all green week with 1.37 kg (3 pounds) lost off my trend line.  As you can see by the upward slope on the green it was a close run thing.  The reason for this is simple:  I ate too much!  In my defence, it was Chinese New Year (it’s now the year of the Tiger) and we had a big family gathering and you are supposed to eat well so I did!  And it was good. :)   Having said that I did not go nuts and still managed to post a loss so I’m quite happy.

Looking at the chart for the year below I think you can definitely tell where the weekends are!  But I’m happy with it.

I’ve got a consistent weekly loss with mainly healthy eating and a bit of variety on the weekends.  I’m still avoiding bread at home and I still think that that is one of the keys to my success.  Bread is really my kryptonite.

One other thing I’ve noticed is that when I have sugar (like I did Saturday evening for Chinese New Year’s Eve) then it is a real struggle the next day to avoid it.  I definitely believe I’m addicted to sugar and avoidance is the best policy overall.  I think I’ll try and stick to savoury snacks instead of sweet.  I’ve also found that after not eating sugar for a while that sugary snacks are just not as nice as I remember although after having them I still long for more. :p

I’m travelling to Christchurch and Wellington for two days this week and it’s going to be interesting to see how I manage my eating while having mainly restaurant food.  I’m going to pack my running gear too so expect to see at least one post about running in a different city!

I’m the same way with sugar, it’s a real trigger for me. If I stay away from it, I really don’t crave it too much. But when I do have some, the craving for it comes right back and I want MORE! So for the most part I just try to avoid it too.

Great job! Sugar is my crutch as well… I know when I snack on dark chocolate the more I snack on it, the more I want it and crave it.

So I stopped buying that for awhile. :)

Three pounds in a week, awesome!

Good job anyway. Chinese new year only comes around once a year so you will only have one time to use the excuse. Who wouldn’t want to be able to have an excuse and still lose 3 pounds anyway. Good job!

Big congrats!!!! I love my bread too! At least I am not a butter person. I love it plain & toasted! I have found a way to work it into my daily life without regrets! :-)

Enjoy your runs in a new place!

Sugar is also addictive for me, so I am staying away from it!

Great week, Andrew!!! I have the same problem with too much sugar – if I eat something like cake, cookies, etc., it seems to set off a cycle of me wanting more – not a great thing when you’re trying to lose weight!

I may give the physics diet thing a try…

I’m the same way with sugar. I recently had a battle with a bag of frozen cookie dough chunks. It took an awful lot of restraint the following day, but I’ve been cookie free for several days now.

Also, thanks for the links to all those blogs.

Great week again Andrew! Mine hasn’t been this good due to injury but hopefully the next one will be a solid one. Unfortunately I like both salty and sweet snacks, I’m an equal opportunity snack eater. But I have pretty much cut out all snacks from my life now. If I don’t eat it I don’t crave it.

Great job! You’re right on about sugar and bread. It’s so obvious when I let too much sugar into my system. It’s such a drag.

Bread is so hard to resist, especially at restaurants. You get there. You’re hungry. They put hot bread in front of you. If they’re really evil, they give you honey butter, too. How do you resist that?

Oh yeah, and on account of a book that’s been a huge influence on my wife (and by extension me) the whole sugar thing is so important. It seems that almost all health issues can be linked to ingestion of processed sugars, which send your body into insulin overproduction, which subsequently tells your cells that you have to store fat, meaning you are not getting the energy you need, which makes you more hungry, and leads you to crave more sugar. The book is called “Good Calories, Bad Calories” and everyone should check it out. The physiological processes are described in amazing clarity, and it is not a preachy sort of thing. Just facts.

I think the most important words in your post are “consistent weekly loss.” We all slip. Sometimes we fall. The important thing is that you’re still conscious and you know what caused the results you got on the scale. Keep working hard and the overall results will be much more satisfying than those of any one week!

I’m the same exact way. There’s even a debate over here that the type of sugar that is in almost all of our processed foods is a huge problem, because high fructose corn syrup is considered way more addictive than sugar. There are also other debates that it should be regulated the way nicotine is here.

Either way, I know that I find it easier to not have it at all, than to have “just a little.”
