Smiling on the run

Michelle over at Just trying to figure it all out did a great post on smiling the other day:

It may be 7am, you may be one of those cars stuck in traffic as I run by you, you might have a horrible day coming up, but the sight of a happy, bouncy, running person with two spotty trotting dogs beside her happily smiling as you go by is bound to make you smile too, whether you like it or not.
Thus, I have passed the smile on, and hopefully made your day a little bit better, if only for a second.

I’ve seen her once or twice and she does smile a lot.

But the part of her post that resonates is this:

What is nice is that the regular walkers see me coming, and are now ready with a big smile for me when I come running by. They know the drill, they know I am chirpy in the morning and will smile and say something to them, and so they prepare themselves with a big smile too, and a quick “Lovely morning today” or “I’ll catch up with you one day” response.

I’ve got my regulars too!  And it’s great to give them a cheery smile and get that cheery smile back. :)

I wish I was that chipper in the morning! I get up quite early (between 5 and 5:30) but I’m not really chipper until at least 7:30!!!

That is so cool! I don’t really have “regulars” on my running route (cuz my runs are so erratic), but I love the sense of comradery amongst the runners I see.

The closest I have to a regular is momma moose and baby moose that I’ve seen a few times over the past year. They don’t smile when they see me.

I had some people I would regularly “run” into back in Florida. Here, I just walk on my country road and never see anyone walking. But there are familiar cars along the way – does that count?!

If only I could get myself to be so chipper in the morning. My brother’s a morning runner/lifter. Always at his best then. I’d rather be at it later in the day though…

I like this. I think I am becoming a morning person. On my days off I have been waking up at 8 or slightly before…that’s monumental for me.

That’s one of the things about runners. They always seem so… Happy. That’s a big part of the reason I decided to start the Couch-to-5k program. I’ve always hated running, but if others are so happy when doing it, then I must not have given it a proper chance

I run in suburbia with not a lot of people in sight but I do wave at every single car that passes me and I say hello to everyone I see on my route. That’s just the right thing to do. They usually wave back and hopefully think about running and runners for a second.

Morning is not my best time of day. I need to get up at 5 am and stumble around for a good hour getting ready for work. Give me a few hours though and I am good for a smile or two then!

I saw a sign the other day that said, “Smile, it confuses people!” How true! I love seeing others smile, but my wife says I don’t smile enough. I guess I need to try harder.

I have seen this phenomenon too, the passing of a smile or a mood, there is a woman in my gym that I see almost every day, she is walking out as I am walking in and she ALWAYS smiles and tells me to have a good workout and I tell ya its pulled me out of a bleh mood more than once. I just wonder if I ever pass it on or if my game face gets put on too quickly as I walk to my bike ;)

This is a excellent post, thanks! It’s the first time I visit your website, just found it via Facebook. I’ve been browsing around and there’s a lot of top quality work. But one thing… I tried to put it to my Google Reader and can’t. Perhaps it’s a problem of mine only… I’ll contact you if it continues!
