Weigh-in #19 2010: Steady as she goes

As you can see from the graph it’s a pretty flat trend line this week:

The year itself is starting to flatten out a bit too:

I will be starting to cut down my mileage somewhat over the next few weeks as I enter the taper period of my marathon and half marathon training.  This means I’ll have to really start watching what I eat as at the moment I can get away with a few excess calories due to the amount of running I’m doing.  I really don’t want to gain weight just before the marathon!  I did that last year unfortunately.

The fitter & “lighter” we get, the harder it gets towards that end of the weight loss journey.. well, of course in my eyes, my journey is life long! BUT, less to lose so harder to lose. I know you will put together a plan that works! You done good!

Will you be carbo loading in the week leading up to the big event? If so, you will gain a little weight, for the sake of being properly fuelled before your marathon.

One of the hardest things for me to do is to eat less when I start running less. On taper weeks I tend to want to eat more for some reason.

Looks like you are doing the right thing by thinking ahead for the days when you will not be burning as many calories with reduced running mileage. You seem to be getting the maintenance thing down pat!

Overall looks like your maintenance is going well. Today was my first day in the red on Physics Diet – went a little overboard on Mother’s Day yesterday! I was just barely in the red, and I’m sure I’ll be right back on track tomorrow when things level out.

Not a bad week at all! I overindulged ALL weekend and boy is the scale showing it – no weekend long run + overeating as if I did have a long run = bad scales ;)

It sounds like you are focused on your upcoming marathon. I’m sure that focus will help you guard against adding unwanted weight before the run.

    Hi Andrew

I know you purchased a treadmill a couple of years ago. Do you still use it and do you think it was a good purchase? I am trying to decide whether a treadmill would be a good purchase and whether it will collect dust.

You are doing so well with your running

Hmm…lately it’s been gathering dust but in winter it does get used quite a bit. Mainly by my wife I admit as now that I’m running longer distances I tend to go outside unless the conditions are truely atrocious.

    Nice graph!

So when is the marathon? Have you looked out beyond that date yet for your next event?

This is really good advice for all of us after a big race (mine is a piddly 10k at the end of May). All the training we’re doing means we can eat more, and we need to adjust our portions accordingly after the fact. Thanks for the reminder!

Great advice.. and I agree with the other commentor – the closer you get to your goal.. the harder it seems to get!!

Those are some pretty cool graphs Andrew and it’s awesome to see how much weight you’ve lost since the get-go. Best of luck with you taper and your upcoming race – I’m sure you’ll kick butt!

Good stuff. I have always gained weight just before a marathon. Good thing is you burn like 3000 calories or so running one.
    Keep it up.
