Vibram Five Fingers, a stubbed toe and back on track
I’ve been intrigued by the Vibram Five Fingers ever since I heard about them and this past weekend I finally managed to get my feet in a pair!
I bought the KSO’s (Keep stuff out!).
My initial impressions are pretty positive. They snugly. They are very light. It’s almost like you are not wearing shoes. I haven’t gone for a run in them yet but I’m hoping to sometime this week. I won’t be using them as my primary running shoe (at least not this year) but I do want to give them a go.
In other news I’ve had one run since the marathon (on Friday). I did a very easy 4.5km local loop with my wife and it was most enjoyable. I was supposed to do a 10K yesterday but I stubbed my toe while vacuuming and it went all purply. It hurt like hell and at first I thought I had broken it but this morning it is not really sore but it looks pretty disgusting. My whole little toe and part of my forefoot is a nice purple colour!
I’ve had a week off eating sensibly and running (as part of the post marathon relaxation) and now it’s time to get back on track. I’m cutting out all junk again and want to try and lose about 3 or 4 more kgs before I start my serious training for the Taipei marathon. More about that later.

What about the Lemon Treat??? Those shoes look a bit freaky.

Hi Andrew,
Did you get this pair of ‘shoes’ in NZ? I’m interested to try it out but not sure where to get it from?

Yikes. I sure hope it’s not broken. Our 10 year old broke the little toe on his right foot this spring and it wasn’t much fun.

I’m looking forward to hearing how the VFF go for you. I’m definitely intrigued by them, but still haven’t had the urge to try them on just yet.

I am a proud owner of VFF KSO as well. Truly loves it. I used it for short distance only. I would highly recommend you to get injinji socks. They are extremely comfortable. As you use VFF, you will be amazed how naturally you will feel when you run in.

Wow! I can’t wait to hear your report on the “shoes.”
And everybody gets a break from being perfectly fit now and again.

Ouch! Sorry about your poor little toe. I hope it feels better soon. Intriguing shoes, I’ll be interested in future reports.

Those are some freaky looking shoes. But, to me most footwear seems odd so if these get you a fit and feel closer to the natural thing then they will bewinners.

I also love my VFFs, And I just bought a pair of Bikila’s. Sweet! It’ll be nice to see how you like yours.

You’ll have to let us all know how you like them. I’ve been intrigued by the five-fingers but don’t have the funds to try them out only to discover they’re not for me.

I must admit, I’m mildly tempted to get one myself… seeing that I was the one started wearing the toe socks and got funny looks from you back then!
We will see!

I keep looking at the VFF’s, but haven’t quite been able to get myself to take the leap. Hope the toe is OK. My wife jammed hers last year and doctors told her it would have been better if she’d gone ahead and just broken it. It still gives her trouble…

Got to love a man that vacuums!!!!!!!!
I have really bad feet.. flat, wide, overpronate like no tomorrow & bunions so I have to wear very supportive shoes!
Hope your toes is better soon!

Can’t wait till you run in them. I wonder how they’ll do.

I have a pair of KSO’s. I love running on the trails with them. It feels really cool how they grip and feel the ground as I run.

My daughter and I are going to run in the Gorilla Run ( we need to run in a gorilla suit) and decided to wear our five fingers as they will go perfectly with the suit! Don’t ya think?

I try to do one run a week barefoot or in my VFFs (usually my easy Monday run). Usually on grass, but I have hit the trails a couple times. I wear them around town all the time and love the feel of them. My only piece of advice if you start running in them is to keep a low mileage until your feet and ankles and calves start getting use to them.

Personally, I like my shoes
Although I find the whole concept interesting.
Hope the toe feels better!

I’m very interested to hear more about what you think of the Vibrams as you get a chance to run in them more. It seems like everyone is jumping on that bandwagon these days, and I’m definitely tempted myself.

I have heard a lot about these shoes. They claim that you will have less wear and tear on your legs as a result of wearing them. Some of the top distance runners in the world run bear footed over in the African region.
Their must be something to these shoes because they are always are the top finishers?

I keep seeing those shoes on other sites. I think I’d like to try those out in store before I put down the money for a pair.

I know that it will take a lot of time to get used to these shoes. It would be probably a good idea to keep your receipts!
