Tarawera UltraMarathon

I’ve decided that my major challenge for next year will be to do an ultra marathon.  I’m leaning towards this one:

I’m looking at the 60K option as it would be my first ultra.  It’s in March so I should have plenty of time to train after the Taipei Marathon in December.

Thoughts?

Awesome awesome awesome! I’d be in like Flynn if I wasn’t already tossing up between Auckland Half IM and the Rotorua Marathon :)

I run with a couple of people who have done several ultras and they continuously tell me that it’s easier than a marathon. Around here our ultras are on trails and big mountains, so it’s not a total run — it’s a huge test of endurance to be on your feet for an extremely long amount of time. I say go for it; we may be training for one around the same time, although I’m not making a commitment until after my November marathon.

You’re a madman (and I mean that in a good way)!!!

One of my father’s friends regularly runs marathons and ultramarathons. He’s nuts, but I think that anyone who can be that disciplined and compete at that level is a warrior!!!

I am Mac’s (get fit slowly) wife and I am an ultra-marathon junkie! I would encourage anyone who has done a marathon to do an ultra. Running on trails is such a different experience. Plus, I think the focus of an ultra is different than a marathon. Every marathoner is so focused on the clock, but an ultra is more about accomplishment, enjoyment, and adventure.

Based on the results from the 60k last year, I think you should estimate being out there for double your marathon time. Not saying that to scare you, but just so you know what to prepare and train for. Training mileage doesn’t need to be much different than what you would do for a marathon, but just try to do it on similar type trails and really practice eating and drinking and you will be fine. The website looks like it has pretty good info to get started (I am happy to answer any ? also).

Go for it! I love it and I think you will, too.

Funny, I’ve been dreaming about more trail running and ultras too … I’m trying to talk three of my sisters into doing this one with me as a relay – 2 are coming back from injury, one from having a baby … so would be perfect for all of us to train together for :) … and then maybe I’ll do the whole 60k the year after!

Thoughts? Yeah, I have a couple.

I was under the impression that you were a fairly smart guy. There is the brink of insanity…. and there is the abyss, into which you have obviously taken a big step.

I did a 10K last weekend… that was just PLENTY of pain for me. I loved it…. and might even consider doing a half… but there is absolutely NO WAY I am going to punish myself any more than that….. I mean, I didn’t do anything wrong!!!

Thanks buddy- all kidding aside, I think it is great. Do it.
