Do you fartlek?

Just got back from a great little fartlek run with my running buddy Peter.  We set off to do some intervals but very quickly ran out of puff in the midday heat so it sort of devolved into a fartlek session.  One of of us would say go and we’d sprint like mad for a bit.  Good fun!

We had a bit of a storm here on Sunday and this is what it was like where I normally run along Tamaki Drive:

That chap is kayaking on the road!

I was running in the gym today (don’t ask me why – especially considering it’s a beautiful day outside) and I’d run 7km and was thinking that I’d really had enough.  It was pretty boring and my heart just wasn’t in it.  It happens every so often and it is no big deal.

However, something happened that made me flashback to 3 years ago.  The music video playing on the TV in the gym featured this big fat chap lying on the couch channel surfing and eating pizza.  And I saw myself a few years ago.

I only started running 3 years ago.  My very first post on this blog (I had another before then) was about starting to learn how to run using Couch to 5K.

Since then I’ve run about 6 5K races, 5 10K races, 6 Half Marathons, 5 Marathons and I’m in training for my first Ultra Marathon in about 8 weeks.  I’ve run 6,345.9 km (3943 miles).  That’s a lot of donuts!

Needless to say after thinking about all that I got inspired and added another 5k to my run and it was a joy! Open-mouthed smile

Gym time!

I’ve been meaning to join the gym for a while as I want to work on cross training a bit this year.  So I did!

I joined the gym at the University of Auckland as I work for the University and get discounted rates.  It’s close and convenient and really needs air conditioning.  I did a bit over an hour and came out absolutely drenched with sweat.

I really need to start working on some core fitness. I think it will definitely help with my running.

Blogging dry spell.

Blogging has been a bit difficult lately as I’ve felt I haven’t had much to say.  I’ve been exercising a lot and recording most of my thoughts over on Daily Mile.

I’m going to try and get my blogging mojo back and do a few posts each week.
