Do you fartlek?

Just got back from a great little fartlek run with my running buddy Peter.  We set off to do some intervals but very quickly ran out of puff in the midday heat so it sort of devolved into a fartlek session.  One of of us would say go and we’d sprint like mad for a bit.  Good fun!

We had a bit of a storm here on Sunday and this is what it was like where I normally run along Tamaki Drive:

    I need to do more speedwork period. For now, I’m just happy to be running!

    That flooding is incredible. I’ve never experienced anything like that myself. Cheers, Rick

    Nope. Never farlekked. I’ve been mostly confined to running slow for a year straight, but recently have done some more speedwork. I guess farlekking is now a possibility, but for some reason I haven’t tried it.

    Sounds like a good time though, especially with a partner.

    That storm looks intense! Nice picture.

    I have to admit that is one treacherous looking running route!

    Yeah, I definitely do fartlek runs. It helps me to build speed.

    And sometimes it’s a great alternative to interval training.

    Is Fartlek another form of HIIT? I do alot of wind sprints and use high intensity interval training sessions where I sprint as fast as I can followed by a cool down and repeat.

    Thats a lot of water! Almost looks like you are in a river its amazing that that’s actually where you run.

    Wow .. Fartlek’s — I haven’t thought about that term since off-ice practices for high school hockey. Those dreaded running and sprinting intervals; something we just learned to love and hate.

    Wikipedia’s definition of Fartlek – means “speed play” and is a form of interval training combining walking, running, and sprinting.

    I’ve been using Tabata Interval Training using kettlebells. Similar principle just not based solely on running.

    Great article and wow I hope you have dried up from that storm – crazy amounts of water.

    Great inspiring Blog Andrew !!!

    Fartlek is a swedish word from the beginning and means

    Fart = Speed
    Lek = Play

    Another swedish word is smorgasbord

    smorgas = bread & butter
    bord = table

    Now you know ;- )
