Run less, run faster
My good friend Peter has become a bit of a devotee of the “Run less, run faster” method of marathon training ever since I loaned him the book “Runner’s World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary FIRST Training Program”.
It has certainly worked for him as he smashed all his PBs this year.
He’s cobbled together a spreadsheet that does most of the heavy lifting in terms of working out the timings that one needs to do. I’d strongly recommend heading over to his blog and having a look.
It’s currently metric but if you ask him nicely I’m very sure he’d modify it to include imperial units.

Run less, run faster is a great ideal to have. There are many ways to get faster than just running longer and longer, trying to do it faster and faster. Even HIIT training can be useful for long distance runners. It increases VO2 max, which in return, will help you in all aspects of fitness.

Hi. I recently started documenting my own weight loss through healthy diet and exercise. I’ve taken up running, well jogging really and have worked my way from one mile to two miles and most recently completed a three miles jog. So is it better for to try and run the one mile but faster than to try and run the three miles, which is longer?
Hi James,
I’d always go with distance over speed myself.
Speed comes with time.
Cheers,
Andrew

I heard from my yoga instructor to be a better runner, practice yoga. It lengthens stride and makes you all around faster. You will build up some good muscles and flexability from it. You can try some free workouts on youtube or go to a local gym for class.

It’s better to run less and faster but also running slowly for couple of miles also good and keeps us healthy.

Congratulation to your friend Peter. I am not sure that I am really in a position to comment on your statement on “run less and faster” as I am not a running fanatic. One thing I do know is that without a first rate training program commitment and a determined heart your wont succeed as a marathon runner. These three principles apply to any sport.

One thing you can do to increase you speed is to add sprints to your workouts. You can also work to increase your aerobic capacity and stamina by cross-training by swimming. Doing lunges can also help to strengthen the large muscles in your thighs and improve your runs.
Some people run faster because they train harder, or train smarter. While some people may be natural runners, hard work and conditioning is always part of the reason that they run faster.

Enjoyed your post on “run less, run faster”. I am not in a position to agree or disagree as I am not a marathon. To me the the important thing is completing what I started. not the competition.

Running is one of the best exercise to get fit. It’s not so important to run as much as far as you can, a hundred or two will be fine, as long as you run fast just like sprinter does. If you can’t do it, just try a breast walk for an hour.
