Run, run, run. Where is the sun?

If you're new here, you may want to get my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I couldn't do this without the help of my commenters!

As you can tell from my post title it is still raining here in Auckland.  We’ve had 2 storm fronts hit us over the last week and the weather has not been particularly conducive to running outside.  As such, I’ve been making good use of my gym membership and breaking the 20 minute time limits on the treadmills. ;)

I did a nice and easy 5K yesterday and today I did a fartlek(excuse me!) session.  One of my running goals is to do a 20 minute 5K.  It’s a tall ask but why not?  So today I thought I would see what it felt like to run at 20 minute 5K pace (15km per hour).  I did 400m at 11.3 kph then 100m at 15kph and so on until I got to 5K at about 25ish minutes.  15kph is fast!  But, I managed to run 1 km of my 5km at that pace (not continuously mind you) so that’s not too bad.  I won’t be doing this every run but my Tuesday run is going to be a fartlek run from now on I’ve decided.

I completed week 04 day 02 of the 100 pushups program yesterday as well and hope to complete week 04 tomorrow.  I did 27, 21, 21, 18 and 25 (min 25) so only the bare minimum this time.  Still another day down.

I also completed week 01 of the Essential Abs program.

Week 02 is as follows:

Reverse Crunch
Crossover
Crunch: feet first
Opposite arm/leg raise

Workout #1 - 16 reps of each exercise
Workout #2 - 17 reps of each exercise
Workout #3 - 18 reps of each exercise

I’ve realised I have very weak abs indeed!  So hopefully this program will help with that.  I’ve got a few of my friends doing this as well which is great.

Also, my wife has run for 30 minutes in a row!  Give her a round of applause ladies and gentlemen!  It’s funny but when the running bug bites it bites hard. ;)  She is working on a guest post but you can check out her blog if you are keen. *cough*Mizfit*cough*

P.S.  My work had a bakeoff competition today.  Nuff said.

No Long Run, 129 Pushups and a new challenge: Core strength

My long run has been postponed due to bad weather.  We’ve had a rather major storm hit us and there is just no way I want to be out running in the heavy (and cold) rain that we’ve been having today.  Hopefully the weather clears a bit by tomorrow morning so I can head out otherwise it’s going to be a very boring run on the treadmill!

I completed week 03 of the 100 pushups program today. I managed to do 30, 22, 22, 20 and then a stunning 35 (min 27 required) for a total of 129 pushups!  35 pushups is the most I have EVER done in a row so I’m rather pleased.  It just goes to show that putting in the hard work does pay off.  I’ve been on week 03 for three weeks now and to be honest I’ve gotten rather tired of doing the pushups at times.  However, achieving new milestones definitely makes it all worthwhile.

This leads me to my next challenge:

Steve (of 100 pushups fame) over at Run Bulldog Run has just completed the Essential Abs program.  I figure building a bit of strength in my core will help my running.  Well, that’s the theory anyway!

I’ve been meaning to start doing it as well but the thought of doing ab workouts didn’t fill me with delight.  However, I’ve seen dramatic improvements in my strength by doing the hundred pushups program so today I bit the bullet and started.

Week 1:

Reverse Crunch
Crossover
Crunch: feet first
Opposite arm/leg raise

Workout #1 (Monday) - 12 reps of each exercise
Workout #2 (Wednesday) - 13 reps of each exercise
Workout #3 (Friday) - 14 reps of each exercise

I have to admit that after the workout I discovered I had muscles in places I didn’t know had muscles.  Not visually mind you.  The muscles are implied by the aches and pains.  Surely fat can’t feel sore?
